Hello.

After hours, I’ve been developing a Python 3.8.20+ (because of uv support) wrapper for the TestStand COM API (I am trying to fill the "legacy code" gap by using modern astral.sh Rust-based stack for managing project iself). The main goal is a big range of both Windows OS, because of Python syntax compatibility, and engine version compatibility (automation of maintenance for both old and new setup/test stations).

It is designed as a twin API, meaning that if someone is already familiar with the codebase (LabVIEW palette module calls/.NET Interop API calls), they should find it intuitive and easy to match official NI API reference documentation (which is not copyrighted, of course) with extra Pythonic "flavors/sugarifiers."

I would prefer to use it for simple R&D tooling like managing custom data types, creating macros for inserting LabVIEW adapter steps, creating simple analyses for maintenance purposes (like finding obsolete modules and updating via prototypes / adapter step properties manipulation), sniffing UI messages (like creating loggers for HMIs), and [de]serializing PropertyObjects to more common formats as JSON because of dictionary integration.

In the past I was experimenting with optional wxPython integration for user interfaces, but too many headaches with the scale; better to create a UI language agnostic way and server-engine layer independently in my opinion, but for now I am focusing only on a headless approach (for graphical one I am use some tweaks in higher level logic for proper handling Message Popups, but I am aware to not "bloat" wrapper with that). https://github.com/TheDomcio/py-teststand - they are examples for coverage of the core tested (not just API documentation based dumps) functionality. Feel free for feedback, but I am only experienced with the mentioned TestStand APIs/tooling (as my main workplace stack is LabVIEW (for both front-end and back-end) + TestStand ) and using .NET/Python for support utils/modules.

Note: Also I had good experience with cx_Freeze support for creating self-contained executables with toolings based on the project for easier distribution; in most cases, you need just add some configuration to pyproject.toml, as newer versions of cx_Freeze slightly reduce need of creation setup/build modules.

There is a top level table called UUT_RESULT but it may not be obvious to a new user how to get the results from a test run in the UUT_RESULT table with a given ID GUID.

To this end I give an example below in the hope it saves someone else the pain of surfing the internet trying to find an example.

The SQL script below when run will return all the results for a test. Obviously you will still need to read up on SQL but it is a good starting point.

There is a comment in the code on how to make sure only tests with results are returned.

The SQL script is a lot more readable when coloured in a SQL editor.

	Hi,

(This is a repost from NI's community forum. No answers there so I'm trying my luck here 😀 )

As many of you are likely aware, TestStand is a powerful tool with numerous features and incredible flexibility. While these aspects are undoubtedly valuable, they can sometimes result in the creation of test sequences that are challenging to read.

In my workplace, particularly with many newcomers learning TestStand, there's a tendency to be awestruck by its programming language-like capabilities, leading to the use of excessive loops, parameters, and if-cases where a simpler, flat sequence would suffice.

Recognizing the need for clarity in test sequences, I've taken on the task of creating a style guide. The aim is to keep sequences coherent without unnecessary complexity.

My question for the community is whether anyone has already developed such a guide and is willing to share it?

	Thank you in advance!

	Hi,

This is actually a re-post of a message I posted in the offical forum but since I've failed to receive any answer there I'm going to try my luck here as well.

So I am having an issue with the community access scope of a VI inside a packed library (hence the title...) and I can't figure out if I have actually stumbled upon something noteworthy or if I simply fail to understand what the community access scope implies.

	Let me exemplify:

	Image 1

I create a library with two sub libraries. I set two of the vi's to public, one to private and one to community access scope. And I create a build specification for a packed library. This is of course an example but it resembles my actual library structure.

	Image 2

I also let library A be a friend of B (although not doing this doesn't seem to affect anything). In practice I want library A to access certain VI's inside library B but they should not be visible to the outside world.

	Image 3 and 4

If I now make a build of the packed library and open that build either stand alone or load it inside a new LabVIEW project the packed library behaves as I expect. Only the public vi's are accessible from the outside world but the private and community are not. And, to be clear, this is what I want to achieve.

	Image 5

Now this is the strange part: if I load this packed library into TestStand, and open it to select a VI, the public VI's are accessible and the private is not (as expected) but also the community VI is accessible. This is not the expected behaviour, atleast not according to my expectations.

So to all of you who knows more than me: Is this an expected behaviour? Is there something about the community access scope I am not understanding? Is there some setting I should or should not activate? Or have I actually stumbled upon a bug?

	Hi Guys,

I am searching for "best practice" for setting up my whole environment.

We use git to store our source and by now I distribute my source (LabVIEW/Matlab/Teststand) via Feeds to my Teststations.

Is there a "clean" way to handly the environment settings, like Adapter, search paths and logfile paths?

I know about the environment file, but every developer have its own folder structure like I store my project under C:/git/projectname... and a college for example C:/projects/git/projectname

What I do right now for the Teststations itself:

i have all my settings/inis and so on in my feed --> this works as planned

But how can I handle my developing machines without !manually! add search directories to my git checkouts?

I was hoping a working space would handle at least directories, but it doesnt...

Some ideas, am I missing something?

	thanks in advance

Hi colleagues - Have any of you tried the new 4-hour hands-on-the-software Certified TestStand Developer exam? I have to renew soon, and I see that NI has changed the renewal from a multiple-choice test to a "practical" exam.

How challenging did you find it? Was 4 hours enough time to get everything done fully?

	Thanks very much,

I've been asked to evaluate TestStand for use in my department. So far, I'm not quite seeing how it will work for us. I was hoping everyone here would give me some insight into something I'm missing.

In my group, we continually test multiple DUTs for extended periods of time. The typical test have up to 15 DUTs, each DUT with a CAN bus multiplexed to a test computer with a single CAN port, and DUT inputs are all parralleled and controlled via relays. It is not uncommon for tests to last 50-100 days. We already have a test shell built in LV8.20 that outputs a CSV file, one file per day, continuously updated with the Test Time, DUT info, PS voltage, Test Step, Test results and limits.

So now for the first question... I'm sure I can modify the generic XML files that TestStand outputs to something more meaningful to us just by learning about XML, so that's not too much of a problem. But, so far with my playing, it looks like it's designed to run only a single DUT at a time. Everytime you start the test, it prompts the user for a single DUT S/N. Am I wrong about this? Is there a way to run multiple DUTs? Am I just being stubborn and not wanting to change my ways?

Thanks in advance. I'm sure I'll have more questions as I continue working with it.

I haven't used TestStand since version 2013, What am I missing? I would like to send a string to a COM port and evaluate the response using a regular expression. Using TS2020 Sequence Editor out of the box, with no customization.

Using a String Value Test Step Type. Comparison type is "RegularExpressionCaseSensitive". Also tried using String Compare, and IgnoreCase

The function's output "response" I am assigning to Step.Result.String.

The comparison always fails. So my work-around is to make it a Log step, and evaluate in a subsequent step, but I'd prefer to have it all done in 1 step.

I'm moving the first steps in TS world and I try to communicate with a VI runs in asynchronous mode. First of all seem that I able to stop the VI at end of sequence, but I cannot read\write data from TS. To make simple the problem, I fixed a constant in my VI and connected it to indicator, mapping the indicator on TS parameter. In the TS sequence I check the value of TS parameter, but the result is different from the expected. Where is my mistake?

	TestStand Version(s) Used: 2010 thru 2016
Windows (7 & 10)
Database: MS SQL Server (v?)

Note: The database connection I'm referring to is what's configured in "Configure > Result Processing", (or equivalent location in older versions).

Based on some issues we've been having with nearly all of our TestStand-based production testers, I'm assuming that TestStand opens the configured database connection when the sequence is run, and maintains that same connection for all subsequent UUTs tested until the sequence is stopped/terminated/aborted. However, I'm not sure of this and would like someone to either confirm or correct this assumption.

The problem we're having is that: Nearly all of our TestStand-based production testers have intermittently been losing their database connections - returning an error (usually after the PASS/FAIL banner). I'm not sure if it's a TestStand issue or an issue with the database itself. The operator - Seeing and only caring about whether it passed or failed, often ignores the error message and soldiers on, mostly ignoring every error message that pops up. Testers at the next higher assembly that look for a passed record of the sub assemblies' serial number in the database will now fail their test because they can't find a passed record of the serial number.

We've tried communicating with the operators to either let us know when the error occurs, re-test the UUT, or restart TestStand (usually the option that works), but it's often forgotten or ignored.

The operators do not stop the test sequence when they go home for the evening/weekend/etc. so, TestStand is normally left waiting for them to enter the next serial number of the device to test. I'm assuming that their connection to the database is still opened during this time. If so, it's almost as though MS SQL has been configured to terminate idle connections to it, or if something happens with the SQL Server - the connection hasn't been properly closed or re-established, etc.

Our LabVIEW based testers don't appear to have this problem unless there really is an issue with the database server. The majority of these testers I believe open > write > close their database connections at the completion of a unit test.

I'm currently looking into writing my own routine to be called in the "Log to Database" callback which will open > write > close the database connection. But, I wanted to check if anyone more knowledgeable had any insight before I spend time doing something that may have an easy fix.

	Thanks all!

	Hi, everyone,

Recently, I'm using TestStand in my work. I have meet some problems about the "object reference variable" which need your help. The problem is descriped below:

	1: I have pre-defined some station global variables by sequence editor which means the instruments class which I will use in the sequence actions;

2: I have writted a Application UI by LabVIEW. When the user start the application(.exe), it will initial all instruments in my systems and write the all inited instrument objs to these pre-defined object references. The reason why I design this mechanism is that some instruments will use TCP/IP for remote control and I don't want connect and dis-connect TCP/IP frequency. The way to write object reference from LabVIEW to TS is below:

	3: After write the object reference to TS, I try to run a sequence file, the TS says "the object reference is nothing";

I want to whether it is possible to write object reference in LabVIEW to TS? If anyone knows, please help me, thanks a lot!

	Hello Everyone,

Im pretty new to TestStand, and have to modify a pretty extensive sequence, mainly, we only want to add a step at the end that will retrieve some information from preovius steps and put them in a txt file, this will be done easy using a step to cal a VI, the issue is that i cant retrieve the values i need.

This is my MainSequence, this is where the UUT is being tested, i will only focus on 1 value, i want the result value from the 340nm Position Check step:

This is my "TestReport" Sequence, it will run after the main sequence, i want to retrieve information in the GetTestResult VI, It seems that i cant get the right context or values,

I have tried using in step settings, the Context "in" as "RunState.SequenceFile.Data.Seq["MainSequence"]." and then in the lookup string tryied using "Main["340nm position check"].Trans_Red.Result" but it returned an empty string, it should be returning a string like "6.83458985222004".

am i doing something wrong?, im attaching the seq file as reference, but not the VI.

Thank you so much for your help.

Hello,Everyone, I'm a LabVIEW developer from China,Wuhan. In the recent, I start to use TestStand in my project. However, I have meet some problems which need help. The problems are descriped below:

	1: I write a log class (help to record log info in my program) based on actor framework to archive multi-thread log printing; The Log source code structure is in the attatched figure;

	2: I want to use the Log class API(write log/clear log/Open/Close) in TestStand;

	3:  I use the TestStand code module and select the "Class member call". However, when I selected the log class, the sequence editor become very slow, the CPU is 25%;

	4: After about 1 min, the write log API finally loaded to TestStand , but if I switch to this action from other action, the Teststand will slow again;

I think the reason is the Log class is involved with to to many classes(Since Actor Framework is make up with many classes). But I think this problems may be caused by a setting that I don't know in TestStand. So, if you know anything which can help me solve this problem, please tell me, Thanks!

In order to keep things as modular as possible we'd like to come up with a set of rules/guidelines that we all agree to follow in some manner, so we can assign one person to develop for tests using one type of hardware, one for a different type of hardware, one to do all of the database interactions, and so on, but with the requirements and interactions for those clearly defined enough such that there's no unexpected interactions between VIs.

We'd also probably need to put in place a few new coding guidelines, such as perhaps a ban on global variables, trying to cut down/eliminate passing clusters/objects between VIs and passing primitives instead, and so on.

I'm just curious if there's anyone out there who has done something like this before and maybe has any advice for things to establish before getting started. It's much easier to do things as right as possible from the beginning instead of waiting until we have hundreds of VIs written in an inconvenient way and we have to make the decision whether to rewrite them all to be "right" or to work around them even though they are "wrong", etc.

My setup is so: Have a LV project calling the TS simple UI. TS then runs multiple UUTs with a modified model seq. When the Main LV program is started, it initializes my many global variables used in the program, the variables in question are queue references. Once the TS UI is up and running the program is automated and requires limited interaction. During the course of the main TS sequence, TS calls many VIs, some that use global variables to get a queue reference so a command can be added to a DAQ or CAN queue.

My problem is that the global variables TS is trying to access never seem to get populated with the refnums that are created in my top level VI that is calling TS. I know my Main VI is populating those globals because I can drop that global on my main VI and monitor it the whole time the program is running. So why doesn't TS see the same globals that my Main VI does?

After posting my problem on NI forum, I couldn't get any hints to achieve what I want to do.

Here is my problem :

I'm buiding a TS Operator interface which can display several distinct execution at the same time (modified // processmodel). Each is displayed in a specific ExecutionView in an independ window (TestSocket ExecView). Each ExecutionView is realted to its own ExecView Manager.

I'd like to create a another window (Supervision window) which lists all running executions (within standard TS ListBar) and when I chose an execution from the ListBar it displays the corresponding execution (and related components : callstack, variables, etc...). So I'll have the same execution displayed into two different ExecutionView (each ExecutionView being related to its own executionView Manager).

The problem is that each time I interact on the same execution (pausing, terminating, showing it), the execution is re-sent to my supervision ExecViewMgr. This seems to disconnect the TestSocket execView from the current execution.

Do you know if it is possible to display the same execution in 2 different ExecutionView ? Does anybody achieved the same functionnality before ?

Hi,

I have a big project to manage which includes :
-TestStand + LabVIEW
-SQL Database for test inputs (UUT characteristics, sequences parameters,...)

-HTML Reports

-almost 10000 different part numbers (that's THE point) with common characteristics (almost 3000 families) + specific characteristics

Everything has to be imaginated.

The SQL inputs tables have to be created.

The number of sequences to code has to be reduced to the minimum because, of course, it's impossible to code 8000 sequences differents files...

The final solution must be as simple as possible.

Possible ways of reflexion :

-XML and Xpath for families and their children
-Intermediate LabVIEW OOP layer for families and their children

-Dynamically created sequences + variables (TS scripting)
-Dynamically created sequences (concatenating a bunch of generic sequences to build a specific sequence)

There is a lot of documentation about TestStand and SQL, but only for results (outputs), not really about inputs.

Does anybody manage this kind of project ? In which way ?

What would be your advices ?

I'm having an issue with a teststand deployment (Teststand 2013, LabVIEW 2013)

I have a deployment which deploys my LabVIEW project containing all drivers (classes and lvlibs) for use in my sequences.

In the deployment (LabVIEW options), I uncheck "exclude vi.lib", "exclude user.lib" and "exclude instr.lib" because the deployment should also work on an PC that only has runtimes and an operator interface.

The build finishes without errors but I cannot open the deployed project...

--> not on a development PC because it finds conflicts (XNodeSupport and some vi's in vi.lib picture.llb)

--> not on a runtime PC (file not found)

Did anyone else notice the same behaviour ?

Thanks in advance for your help, tips and tricks :-)

At first, i thought i had something to do with LabVIEW search paths (because I include vi.lib, it should not search for the vi's in the real vi.lib) but that didn't help...

I've got MyQL 5.1 and TS 2010 installed; the TS 2010 MySQL implementation uses INSERT statements which lack my one pet peeve, a timestamp data type. I think this may be because MySQL at the time 2010 was developed only had a date-time data type.

Does anyone know if a newer version of TestStand includes support for a timestamp data type with the MySQL template?

While paused in an active execution with the execution pointer at the last step in Main, I call Step Over, and in the resulting Trace UI message event callback, I call Execution.Break (the code doesn't realize that the execution will stop anyway); after the callback, the execution pauses at the end of the Main step group. Then, when I call Step Over again, I get the UIMsg_ResumeFromBreak and UIMsg_BreakOnBreakpoint, but no UIMsg_Trace as expected, and the execution doesn't seem to change state. I would expect the execution pointer to advance to the start of the next step after the calling step (there are no Cleanup steps).

Note that this does not occur when the execution pointer does not point to the last step in Main, and also does not occur when the execution does not pause before running the last step in Main.

My only thought is that the TestStand engine is perhaps erroneously inserting an extra breakpoint somewhere, but I don't see a way to determine if the execution will break at the end of a step (including after the last step in a step group) without manually calculating it sometime earlier. Or maybe I'm ignorant of something else going on? Any help is appreciated.

I am struggling with test stand deployment for 3 days. hope somebody can help. ( I am using teststand 4.0 nd labview 8.5 and .net 2.0)

I have sequence files, with many subVi' s and .net assmeblies with dependancies, added to workspace , and when i run the sequence file, it works fine.

Specifically, the sequence file calls many Vi's, some of which use the .net assembly from "C:program filesNational instrumentslabview 8.5use.lib" ( and not specifically from the folder where the Vi resides), and still it works.

However, when i build the same using deployment utility (figure 1), these assemblies( all of which are required) and other go to "installation directorydata" and the build fails(figure 2), as the "property node " for the .net assembly( build using c# public static class) gets invalid( figure 3).

Now, if I browse the target//.. where VI resides, and try to manually add "invoke node" and then 'property node'. invoke node finds the "ZH" class ( Figure 3) , but again, cannot find the property "hearing aid" (figure 3), saying that it is empty. If it can find the class, it has found the assembly, then, why the problem with 'property node"?

Now, the same VI in different folder ( C:development...) is able to reference the assembly from "C:program filesNational instrumentslabview 8.5use.lib"( I had added the refernce from labview project initially from different location, but after copying the file to this location, VI's still worked) and works fine (figure 4).

I have tried adding "installation directorydata" to Teststand search directory, but no luck.

I have following questions:

is it manadatory to keep the dl's and their dependencies in the same folder, in which VI's use them, for sucessful build through deployment ? if yes, by default, these would go to "installation directorydata", which is different from "installation directory...VI directory , and would not work still?

it is mandatory to add the VI's that use .net assemblies to labview project, for sucessful deployment? if yes, how do we add a labview project to testsand workspace?

If the assembly can be added to Global assembly cache, would this solve the problem of 'unsucessfull build" of installer , and even if it does, how can (a) I add the assembly to GAC on development system (b) make sure that installer installs the assembly to GAC on deployed system (through deployment utility)?

other than above, does anybody have other solution to my problem?

I am already late for deployment of project to customers, and need immediate help.

Thanks

Here is a post that I created 2 days ago on NI forums : http://forums.ni.com/t5/LabVIEW/LabVIEW-windows-blocked-when-TS-Engine-used-as-a-process/m-p/2324742/highlight/false#M729301

My problem is that I'm currently building a software program requiring TS to be THE execution engine. I mean that almost all actions of playing VIs, sequences, and so on are based on a TS execution.

I then decided to use my traditionnal application framework (see pic attached).

And I'm facing a weired issue : if TS is run as a process (running in background), my main window acts like if it was modal. And then, when this main window is closed (end of execution), all other LV windows (lvproj, VI opened, ...) are not responding to mouse actions (I can't move the windows, click on buttons, ...) but react to keyboard actions...

A guy from NI respond that it's caused TS API ActiveX components, and I shouldn't use it the I want to use it...

Do you agree with him or is there something going wrong somewhere ?!

All examples which I found was when LV application started TS and then register callback. This is in “simple UI example”.

But I want to lunch panel after sequence in TS was started and then register callbacks.

Normally to register callback “Application Manager” is using, but I don’t know how to connect this control to TS context.

Also I try to use TS.IEngine obcject and connect this with TS via RunState.Engine but still nothing.

Could anyone help me to move next step?

This is my simple application example.

Thank in advance adn best reagrds.

I am using SVN to control its sequence file versions.

All steps in the sequence files are steptypes. And they all are settable via edit steps.

One problem is that, when you set your step via edit steps, TS UI isn't refreshed so the programmer might think that the edit step failed programming the step.

See this NI TestStand Idea Exchange thread : http://forums.ni.com...p/idi-p/1753456 (please Kudo if you think the idea is great... ).

So NI advices to generate an IncChangeCount to force TS to refresh its interface. This method makes the sequence file to be seen as 'changed' (star next to its name in the TS tabs).

When launching an edit step, it loads the current programmed values of the step to display them on the edit step interface. If the user doesn't change them and the IncChangeCount is generated, then the file is seen modified ( ) and the 'Change counter' is incremented.

In these conditions, SVN doesn't detect any change to the file !!

This would mean that the 'change counter' is not stored in the file... Do you have any idea on where it could be stored ?

Disclosure: I have not played with TestStand in a long while...

This is what I've done so far:

1. Successfully have put together a simple test sequence comprised of 5 steps

- Initialize Power Supply.vi

- Initialize Instrument B.vi

- Display Hello World.vi

- Close Power Supply.vi

- Close Instrument B.vi

2. I'm able to successfully run this test sequence (BTW, I'm actually talking to real instruments)

The issue I'm having is that once my test sequence has completed its execution, if I try to open either of the VIs from above it shows that "The SubVI is wating to Run"

May I ask, why that is?

In advance, thank you for the feedback.

Cheers,

I developed the VI and teststand sequence on the development PC that everything works fine and now i like to deployed to the target PC. I have reuse lib at C:Program FilesNational InstrumentsLabVIEW 2010User.lib folder. On target PC only labivew runtime/teststand engine/OperatorOI installed no User.Lib folder, OK ...i just copy user.lib folder from development PC and put in the same path on the target PC, same process as other Dependent lib inside VI.lib/Instrument Lib/etc.

and for the specific UUT test sequence and support LabVIEW VIs like "c:Intel486" i just copy from the development PC to the target PC and keep the same path.

why i doing this is i want each specific UUT sequence has separate installer and keep same folder structure on the development and target PC.

Here are the problem-> if i have very simple teststand sequence(only one vi call only show the dialog) without calling reuse vi in the LIB then everything works on the target PC, but if use the vi in the user.lib or others then the error message as attahced screen shot.

anyway it's have chinese, but it seems the vi can't find it's subvi.

I search internet that get few information and if i understand correctly that teststand deployment tool process the vi and put the subvi on the supportVI folder and the call relationship on that folder. but here i keep the same folder structure on the development and target PC but still no lucky. i know that target PC only have the labview runtime engine so it can't change anything inside during load vi even vi have same name on the labview search path.

So the point is can i deployment teststand and labview vi like this way? If can, how? what's the process?

BTW, i don't like use the teststand deployment tool as i like keep same folder structure between developement PC and deployment PC.

thanks,

We have an extensive library of reusable LabVIEW classes that we are utilizing both or automation framework GUI and TS sequences. A part of these libraries is a generic application messaging systems that is based on a networked based queue. Our messaging classes are self contained and designed to not require any external input. They use internal data for references to the queues. The problem we have encountered is that in our application the GUI and the TS sequence actually share different application space and cannot share a reference to a queue. We need a method to programatically determine which memory space we are in. We would use this information to do a look-up for the correct queue reference. We do provide an initialize method for our messaging class which will create the queue and store the reference. We need a way to get a unique identifier based on the memory space it is running in. This method needs to be generic and not assume we are running in a TS environment. The process ID and application name will not work since both the GUI and TS sequence will share this. Any ideas on a workable solution?

Access results in teststand

Does anyone know how to access all the results in teststand using labview before they are parsed by the report and database sections of the sequence file.
- TestStand does not recognize LVOOP Objects, so the developper has to flatten the Object Reference to string and then pass the string to TestStand, and viceversa, if they get the flattened Object they need to unflatten to string in LabVIEW: http://digital.ni.co...62573A9004C5A07

Currently developing an application embedding TS interface (ActiveX) in several languages, I'm facing a problem with the TS UI strings : they are only available in English !!!

If you want to display your TS interface in other languages, you have to translate INI files that are placed in "C:\Program Files\National Instruments\TestStand 4.2.1\Components\Language\<Language>"...

That's a lot of work !!

So the idea is, maybe, you guys have already done this work for several languages... Why not sharing it here ?

PS: As soon as my French translation is finished, I'll post it here !

I currently use it by skipping every step except the ones I'm working on, but I'd like to generate a list of steps at the beginning of the execution that will allow me to select which steps to run. I figure on making a boolean array and using Preconditions to decide whether or not to run a step. I've written something similar, but it depends on a static list of steps. I want something to dynamically adapt to the ever-changing sandbox sequence.

How can I get a list of steps from a VI called at the beginning of the sequence? I've looked at the OI examples and nothing jumps out at me.

We have created a TestStand sequence using mainly labview vi code modules. The test sequence is complete and is running as it should in the sequence editor.

After I used the Deploument Tool to build an image which could be moved a production PC, something went wrong. The test sequence will still start and it seems to run fine, but the execution is extremely slow!

It doesn''t matter if I run on the production PC or on my computer (where the sequence was created). I can run the sequence from the development location, and everything is ok, I then close the sequence and load it from the location created by the Deployment Tool and it runs slowly...

It is not because the tracing speed is set to slow, and it seems to be the vi''s themselves that are executing slowly. Almost as if the "Highlight Execution" is on.

Any idea what is going on...?

I am supposed to customize the Test Stand test report, I just looked the test stand help manual, which shows very simple example of how to add some additional Rows and Columns in the Table. But my task is to entirely change the Table structure and appearance and to include some other additional description of the test procedures into the table. So I planned to add this additional stuffs into the original xml document and to edit the style sheet to get the appearance. But the thing is I am very new to the xml, XTLS, Javascript, VBScript and the HTML, unfortunately the Style sheet was developed with the four scripts all together. I can't able to find the perfect documentation of the Style sheets also, studying these scripts and implementing to get the desired table stucture will take a lot of time. Is there any other way to do this ??????

We are currently using TestStand Simple Operator Interface (LabVIEW version) to run the tests, and it is with the Operator Interface that we are having a problem.

If we use the TestExec.exe file that came with the TestStand installation everything works fine. But we need to make some modifications to OI and if we open the project file and recompile the OI, then the OI will not close properly. It seems to shutdown the testengine and stop execution of the VI, but the window does not disappear until we move the mouse or there is activity on the keyboard.

When I open the project file LabVIEW informs me that the project was last saved in version 7.1.1 and we are now running 9.0.

Can anyone tell me what is holding the window on the screen until there is activity on the mouse or keyboard?

My sequence file is using a SequenceFileLoad callback to automatically start its own execution using the TestUUTs entrypoint. This is accomplished by calling the Engine.NewExecution method. The problem I am having is that my custom LabVIEW user interface is not switching to the execution view when the execution begins. If I manually start the execution using the TestUUTs button, the execution view is displayed.

In my UI, the change from the sequence view to the execution view happens in the DisplayExecution event callback as well as the StartExecution event callback. I also tried the Executionchanged event callback but realized that it did not apply in this case. The complex UI that ships with TestStand works correctly and, as far as I can tell, I am using the same event callbacks to handle the change in my UI.

These VIs must be active to stimulate the UUT for relevant measurements. These elaborate stimulation VIs are actually subsystem simulators - synchronous state machines to be general - not by any measure passive objects. Precision timing and communication are fundamentally used to drive these routines.

As I am learning TestStand, it is not clear to me how to interact with or control a VI while it is active in a sequence execution thread. (Reading page 3-12 of the LabView with TestStand manual, it doesn't even appear possible). It is imperative that these stimulation VIs are launched and the main sequence can then carry on with the actual assessment, while still being able to interact with the stimulation routines. I've gotten far enough to be able to implement a VI and then return to the main sequence after implementing other threads, but I do not know how to pass information to or from these other VIs. Global variables only seem to be available in the TestStand variable space...exclusive from what the LabVIEW engine sees...is this true?

We were on the road to develop our own "test executive" (which we actually recognize more or less as a system simulator because our UUTs are only smaller components of a much larger system, so we simulate parts of the rest of the system to interact with the UUT), but we were strongly encouraged that TestStand could accomplish these things for us. So I'm trying to develop some tests on it to see if it's the thing.

any comment would be greatly appreciated.

I am working on a project which require communication between TestStand and multiple LabVIEW executable programs. This project is used for testing the operating of a system which involved different type of controller which is simulated by independent software-in-the-loop or hardware-in-the-loop LabVIEW programs. So far we discussed that the TestStand will be run on a PC which communicated with other PCs which run seperated simulator by ethernet. Each of this simulator are distribution version which is installed as executable on each system, it's not in the developement evironment. I am trying to figure out how to from TestStand I can access and change value of the controls on the GUI of each simulator the set the value as well as read the value as feedback. For this requirement I think about using VI server solution which is get the reference of the controls on the simulator.

After doing some experience examples, I found some issues

I post here my first question:

I tried with some examples in articles on NI web site.

This is one example:

Controlling Two Executables with the VI Server

http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/epd/p/id/1366

In the example the Master .vi try to get the reference from the Slave.vi which stored in the same location with the exe file. This is inrealistic with the distribution version where the installation files are not located in the same location with source files.

I still cannot find an example which point directly to an executable file, not the vi file and get the reference to the controls on the panel. If you know any information about this, please let me know.

Best regards,

That I can have different sequence for different instruments. and from different test I can call a sub sequence.

Like

-Instrument 1

     init

     Read 1

     sett 1

     load setting

- Instrument 2

     init

     Read 1

     sett 1

     load setting

Test Sequence :

Insrument 1 init call init in instrument1.seq

Instrument 2 init call init in instrument2.seq

read level call read1 in instrument.1seq

Read volt Call read2 in instrument2.seq

And then if you fix a bug in one of your instrument, you will have this implemented direct in all you sequence.

So far all OK.

But how to handle the values between the sequence?? I like to avoid using station globals. due to the fact that I need to sett up all station globals on each station. And this makes the deployment part more pain in the ......

So if any have suggestions or other alternatives please share your great idea with me

Basically, I have a series of nested loops and when I encounter an error on a step, I need to go back to the beginning of the sequence and start over but I want all the loops to pick up where they left off. I'll try to give a text based example:

Sequence Start

    Init Test

    Init Database

    Init Instruments

    For i = 1 to 10

        For i2 = a to e

            Do x

        Next

    Next

if an error occurs at Do x where i = 5 and i2 = c then I want to go back to Sequence Start, Execute all steps but on the loops I want i to start at 5 and i2 to start at c. Furthermore if the condition passes normal looping must resume, if the condition fails three times then the program must terminate. Is this possible to do? Any help is appreciated as I'm new to TestStand.

First, our UI and the TestStand sequences will need to share some data and we are using shared variables for some of the data. Secondly, we are using LabVIEW 8.5.1 and TestStand 4.0. We have been testing in the development environment and everything appears to be working fine. When we did get a system to build we noticed our shared variables did not appear to be getting updated correctly. Data was not getting added or updated. Everything worked as expected in the development environment. In an effort to isolate some of the issues we are seeing we decided to use a very basic system to test things out. We built the example Shared Variable Client-Server.lvproj from the NI examples. When we try to build the system we get the following error message:

When the user presses them, the roundtable turns the new DUT in to the test equipment. The roundtable gives a ready signal to the test PC signaling that TestStand can start the test. Now TestStand has to auto generate a S/N from a database from a certain criteria that I won't write of here. The auto generating dialog should also have a button where the user can stop the test, and is the user no presses STOP then the dialog auto closes. Now TestStand can start testing the DUT. I have been thrown in at the deep end by updating an ols system based around HTBasic with LabVIEW at the same time the other software guys want to upgrade the surrounding architecture to bring it in line with a more modern approach so I would like to thank you in advance for any help/pointers that are provided. I would also like to appologise for the slightly vague descriptions of measurements and systems, i am unsure of the IP implications of being exact with my descriptions at this time.

I am beggining to plan the development of a test system that is going to use Agilent equipment to perform lots of different RF tests on a DUT. The test system will include switching matrices to control how the incoming/outgoing RF will be routed to/from the equipment. From a manual front panel control point of view, though not a walk in the park ,this should be acheivable in LabVIEW with my current knowledge (so you should consider this a black box).

The test system needs to be controlled remotely from a Web service front end as this service also links to a database, fileserver and the control systems for the device under test. I have researched the webservice information on the NI site and it all seems relatively straight forward (read not had a chance to play with it so may have more questions later LOL!).

Where the problem lies is that there may need to be a requirement for two of the test systems to be used simultaneously so one of the systems (master?) will provide an output while the other (slave?) performs the measurement.

I need to create some sort of asset managment/assignment where by I decide in advance (possibly on the PC that handles the webservice) which system is the output and which is the receive (master/slave). I also need to incorporate in my system a way to share the test setup information between 2 seperate vis running on 2 seperate systems.

I am guessing the easiest way to set the systems up at the start would be using a standalone master vi as a GUI that you can manually set all the flags for master/slave etc and this could be done at system build and calibration. The systems will always be on a LAN at run time but I am unsure how I can dynamically search the LAN and find the systems and assign their duties? Secondly I am uncertain the best way to store transfer the settings to the test systems, would a simple text file that each system checks at vi start be the best way?

My main concern though is the two standalone systems operating to gether to perform measurements. I am used to standard sequencial programming (command>read>result sort of thing). Would this type of system be as simple as a case select at run time (i.e. master true/false)? Or should I be looking into a more complicated but more stable programming standard? I feel that due to the many different types of test need lots of cases to cater for them all on each system if used stand alone, maybe it would be enough to have a couple of extra cases where on case is output and the other is receive. Is this to simple? Am I missing something with this architecture that would make this sort of implementation not work?

Many thanks,

I hope you can help sorry for the long post,

Could some of the gurus here help me out? I need to advise a customer tomorrow about whether they should chose LabVIEW or Measurement Studio as an ADE for TestStand. The application will be engineering system test of a life-critical networked system, especially at large scales.

LabVIEW looks like a nice stable product, but I'm concerned about the level of difficulty of using it in this context. This may be my newness or something intrinsic. But the lack of something as basic as a Map VI or class is worrisome (as are the gyrations that the people who developed the prototype had to go through in a different thread.) Even something as basic as getting a VI to retain a value (memory) seems difficult.

For instance, configuration. The customer wants to load configuration info dynamically to keep it synchronized with their own hardware configurations. In the context of LabVIEW's seeming aversion to memory, does this mean that every test step in TestStand is going to have to reconfigure the system?

I'm not crazy about locking into .NET technology (having read the "Choosing the Right ADE" document,) but I just wonder if the dataflow paradigm is going to create a lot of trouble needlessly.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

I know I'm chiming in late on this, but I can't agree more - I could sooooooooooo use something like this! I can't count how many times I've seen LabVIEW developers create their own "TestStand Lite" to do simple sequencing, only to fall on their faces when they need to do anything remotely complex or really reusable. I think that a real NI-produced "TestStand Lite" would be an excellent conduit to get current LabVIEW programmers into TestStand! Anyone from NI like to comment? Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeease?!?

My recent reply:

Teststand Lite, that would be an excellent idea. It also makes me wonder what happened to the promising OSTE that was abandoned on SourceForge. I myself use a rewritten Table based version of the original NI Test Executive for basic sequencing and a 'Test Manager' API for managing excel based test specifications, results and report generation. I am looking into creating a new version that would have a better test sequencing API with extended features such as subtests, vi template based parameter editing, script variables and conditional looping. Personally I would rather just buy a 'TestStand Lite' if it was under $1000 with free run-times if using NI hardware.

The last time I saw TestStand was version 1 (there was lots of colorful metaphors used at the time) and I've not used the DSC module.

I have asked NI this question 3 times and have come up with 2 different answers, but I'm hoping someone here has some hands on experience or at least discuss why this shouldn't work.

First, I would like to use NI Vision functions in a deployed TestStand 3.5 "application". The TestStand is a deployment license and using the LabVIEW 8.2 Runtime as the adapter. On the customer computer, LabVIEW Professional 8.2 and Vision Development 8.2 is also installed, but deactivated. I would like to use the Vision Runtime license which is activated, however, I get a not a valid license error after deactivating the Vision Development on the customer PC. I have tried this on my work PC, and the vi works fine with the Vision Runtime activated and Vision Dev deactivated. I'm in the process of creating a new VM in Parallels to test this in a cleaner environment.

Anyway, so far one NI sales person says it should work, one sales person says it shouldn't work, and tech support also says that using the Vision Runtime is not valid in this configuration. Purchasing Vision Dev license is an expensive option. Buildng a dll in LabVIEW might work as well. What have any of you guys done in this situation? Thanks.

What I want to do is somewhat the opposite of how TestStand and LabVIEW were intended to interact I believe, since TestStand is intended to be the top level application calling LabVIEW.

What I want to do is control the TestStand application from LabVIEW. More specifiaclly, open the application, display the window, open a teststand sequence file and start it.

That's basically it, sounds simple enough doesn't it? I looked through the ActiveX APIs and couldn't find any clear-cut way of doing it. For example, when controlling MS Office, you can open the application, make it visible, open files, etc. I'm having a hard time finding a way to do it through creatable objects.

I'm probably missing something that's really easy. Could someone who knows point me in the right direction? I should be able to take it from there. So far, the only path I've been down is with the Engine API.

For now, I've been calling the sequence file through the command prompt subVI. It works, but doesn't allow me the level of control I'd like.
