How and where does one save a default VI that will be automatically loaded whenever you do File - New VI or rubber band code and Create SubVI?  Several years ago I knew how to do it for New VI, but I found recently that NI changed the way things are referenced.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

We're currently using LabVIEW 2020 for development on some older W11 machines, but new machines that we're being given for some reason are giving us problems when we try to install the development environment (Forces Windows into a recovery loop after installation).  So, we figured it's about time to migrate to a newer version.  

We don't 'upgrade' very often, so we want to make sure that whatever version we pick will work for us for as long as possible until we must upgrade again.

I think its more than a year ago now that Ni changed there license policy, a lot of people, employees of company's and the company's who were using Labview software were astonished by the actions of Ni. Ni partly did change back some of their decisions after a while. I myself as others did invest a lot of time into Labview, lets be honest about it, a lot of company's are simply not willing to invest a lot of time in their employee's. So I did spend a lot of evenings playing around with Labview and other languages, it can be fun to nerd around with code. But the reward needs at least to be something some stability in your career or freedom of choice where to work. The company I work for now does not give stability. So, I did have a look around and did search for other company's who offer Labview jobs. My first impression is that, there are fewer job's available for Labview compared to a few year ago. It might be different in other countries, I live in the Netherlands myself. A while ago I had contact with Ni for the renewal of my license, they were helpful, however I am not sure if they did enough if I do a Labview-job-count. 

So whats you opinion and or observation, do you see a future for Labview? Do you think there will be more jobs in the future and is it wise to invest more time in Labview? Or is it better to invest time in other languages? If you answer please tell the country you live in. I use the RT packages they have a higher cost than the 'standard' Labview, so this might also influence things.

The issue is that when stopping the root actor, the oscilloscope actor throws an error when trying to send the data (which is expected, since the root actor no longer exists).

However, the problem is that when executing Stop Core—where the acquisition and UI loops are stopped—for some reason error 1 is generated and the actor does not shut down properly. On the other hand, when sending the Stop message, it does stop correctly.

Before you get too excited, this is a sort of discussion to help me figure out what to do for a commercial product. I'm in two minds so I thought more minds could out-vote either of them.

I'm sure some people of the community are ware of ECL. I recently released a new version which fulfilled my bug-bears about certain features I've wanted for a while. Now I'm free to implement anything I want in terms of nice-to-haves instead of "I really want this". So I settled on MQTT as it fits with my aspirations to increase the protocols and ECL now has everything at the lower levels that would be needed for virtually any high level protocol.

So the decision for supporting MQTT is made but I'm in two minds whether to use a 3rd party pre-built library and provide LabVIEW bindings of whether to write one from scratch in pure LabVIEW.

Writing from scratch would be an interesting learning exercise and licencing would not be a problem. It'd take some time but nowhere near as much as I have before a new feature release is due. I've already read the spec and prototyped some stuff and concluded it'd be a pain but perfectly doable once I put more energy in to it. The only sub-decisions I'd have to make is if it would be more elegant to do things like packet and bit stuffing in a DLL rather than LabVIEW as, for my first foray,  I have the impression it would be inelegant in LabVIEW.  But that's not really a factor, just an implementation detail (there are plenty of DLLs that ECL relies on already). I could also support the latest version but it might be a pain to support multiple protocol versions to begin with (rules, eh?).

My other route is to use a 3rd party library and write LabVIEW wrappers. Certainly the easier route for implementation but most libraries only support MQTT 3.x rather than version 5. Then we get to the dreaded licencing. The most complete implementations have awkward licences and the permissive ones are a little incomplete in terms of features and version support. I would definitely need a DLL (not really a problem) and the library would need modification to use existing ECL transports. Current implementations tend to handle the TLS and websockets themselves but I obviously want to use the ECL. Those transports are far more configurable and I want it to fit in with the methods used in all the other protocols (we don't need multiple different ways of defining a X.509 certificate for use, do we?). Additionally, most 3rd party libraries use OpenSSL 1.1.1 whereas ECL uses 3.x so some internal functions must be rewritten  to account for deprecations.

So from scratch (lets call it 1.) means no licence headaches, support latest MQTT version but longer to implement (I estimate 2x longer) but using a 3rd party (lets call it 2.) will be much quicker but require modification, headaches with licences, maybe only MQTT 3.x  and probably a lot less hair at the end of it.

Where I am at the moment is I have both 1 & 2 as stand-alone (which was part of my feasability investigation) where I can connect to a server and subscribe to a topic (no publish, no authentication or funny stuff like Will, QoS and Retain).

So I have to decide which route to go the rest of the way with (1 or 2) or maybe there is another?

This toolkit is over 10MB in file size and cannot be published on VIPM, so I uploaded it to Github.Test-Bench-Framework .

I used the TestStand icon inside my own sequence editor and wondered if there would be any copyright issues involved.But it's not commercially available yet.

I was using LabVIEW CE 2023 back in 2023 and my CE license has now expired.  I have had no luck over the years getting a renewed LabVIEW CE license or a NI wipe and CE re-install to work on my computer. I spent so much time trying to get LV CE to go again that I no longer have a desire to use LV CE and will stick to my perpetual license for LV2021 until I stop working or it stops working. That being said I created a project in 2023 that I would like to re-visit but I cant open it with my trusty LabVIEW 2021 version. • showRunAtAnyLoopMenuItem=True - Adds a new menu item to Property and Invoke nodes labeled "Run At Any Loop". When selected, the node turns brown as if a private property or method was selected, even if none are. Function unknown.
• ShowWireAddressMode=True - Adds some additional memory-related information to the context help window when you hover over a wire. Also adds a context menu item to wires called Select InPlace Signals, which likely selects wires that share a memory address. Seems like it could actually be pretty useful for optimization!
• SimShowCompanionDiag=True - Adds a context menu option to the Simulation structure called "Show Companion Diagram", which toggles showing what looks like a "behind-the-scenes" block diagram for the simulation.
• ^NEW! ShowHiddenLibraryItems=True - Shows hidden library items. (big surprise there!) So far I've only seen changes when editing a statechart library, but it seems most of the items in a statechart library are hidden, so it reveals a lot.

There's also some more whose functions I'm not sure of (but look interesting) such as TotallySecretAndPrivateMSNCompanionDiagram, and growSubVI.enabled (might be pretty mundane, but it's false by default and might have something to do with creating subVI's that can grow like XNodes.)

The attached "Open VI Without File Dialogs For Missing VIs.vi" will, given a path to a VI, open the FP of that VI. If there are any missing subVIs, those subVIs will be searched for on disk (unless you disable search in Tools>>Options), but if they are not found, no file dialog will appear to prompt you for where to find them. The diagram of this VI is password protected -- even though Scripting is now released, I put this together using features that are private.

The VI is saved in LV 8.0... I tested it in LV 8.5 and 8.6, but I think it works all the way back.

Sometimes the response time when editing a large VI gets soooo long.

I can easily see it on the mouse cursor when I move to different object and would expect the cursor to change, but it takes 3-5 second.

Am I the only person to experience this?

I have a powerful PC, so that’s not the bottle neck.

It’s like LV decides to recompile the whole VI and do a complete Error Check of all code in the project.

If I restart LabVIEW it looks like it becomes faster for a short while, then it’s back to be frustrating slow.

So I tried to open my main VI direct, not using the project, and then the response was fast.

I do use lots of classes.

Any ideas?

When I changed the default of the Scan String first parameter to 2 then it works fine.

This is my cluster that I am trying to work with.  The problem occurs with the IMAQdx refnum control.

To avoid this behaviour I generate a fixed samplerate waveform (so I the new waveform is longer oor shorter I interpolate it) and loop regenerating and starting it every iteration.
The waveform MUST have a duration major than the generation cycle (that's why I duplicate waveform if not double than the cycletime)
In this way it seems to work as I expect but it doesn't seem a clean solution to me.
Any suggestion of how to improve my code?
(In the past I thought about manipulating the internal buffer use splitting it as a two part buffer, one for the old and one for the new wave but it wasn't possible)

My goal is to parse this JSON into a 2D string array so that each Firebase record becomes one row in a LabVIEW table indicator.

I’m using the JSONtext library, but I’m having difficulty iterating through the nested keys and reliably building each row. My main issues so far:

1. The top-level object contains dynamic child names (-Obew83hY0lgN7ac7JK0, -ObewEcv8G0LtSRTx92G, etc.), so I cannot index them directly.

2. When I extract values using Get JSON Object Keys + Unflatten from JSON, the order of keys is not guaranteed, so my 2D table rows become misaligned.

3. Attempts to build rows inside a loop give me only a 1D array unless I carefully manage the auto-indexing tunnels.

I've written a Steganography API (0.9.0) and will be putting it on my site under a BSD-3 licence. It currently only uses the LSB method but I may do others if there is interest.

I've optimised it as much as I can but I expect that better people than I can improve it's performance. So. The task is to make it as fast as possible.

There is a benchmark with some images included so we can do comparative benchmarks. I'm looking forward to some innovative improvements. The winner gets a mention in the readme under SALUTATIONS.

I just released a small LabVIEW tool that allows you to embed custom data into PNG files and extract it back. The image remains fully viewable while carrying hidden data. Optionally, the data can also be exported in XML format.

Included VIs:

• Encode VI – Appends data to a PNG file or exports to XML.

• Decode VI – Retrieves the embedded data from a PNG file, including XML if used.

Just thought I'd share this, since I googled the INI key and didn't find anything, so I figured nobody's found it yet.

I’m trying to display an MP4 video in a LabVIEW application using ActiveX + Windows Media Player (no other video players).

• On the first run, the video displays correctly.

• On the second run, the Media Player control shows only a black screen.

Here’s what I’ve tried so far:

• Followed the NI tutorial: How Can I Open Video Files in LabVIEW?

• Used Calling a LabVIEW VI by Reference to reload the player.

• Searched existing topics on this forum and on LAVA, but no solution worked so far.

I’ve attached  the example VIs to reproduce the issue.

Has anyone run into this issue with ActiveX + Windows Media Player and found a workaround (e.g., fully resetting/reloading the ActiveX control between runs)?

A simple test project works fine on the PC but fails to restart the VIs on the real-time target. They do stop and I can manually restart them

clicking the arrow but not programatically. I wonder if anybody can point out what I am doing wrong here (maybe overlooking something)?

The semi-obvious choice would be to switch the code so that the data would be streamed on TCP/IP instead. But what higher-layer protocol would you want to use for that? It seems to make like the RESTFul and gRPC models are more client-server oriented. I want something this a very loosely couple producer-consumer model, where you have one producer and any number of listeners.

What are some good candidates?

The only one that seems to be based on picture recogniction is Sikuli, apparently now renamed Sikulix. Could anyone confirm? And is there any way other than picture recognition to interface that 3rd party tool with our Labview application? (I guess we could add a bunch of LabVIEW code to have some TCP/IP communication, but the goal is not to have to modify our application...)

I Have a VI that reads and gets and reset the data on the wire and am using the RefNum for manipulating or storing the data on the wire meaning I only have a reference wire passed through my multiple loops.

To get variant and translate it into my data I decided to use a polymorphic VI and use the type as a data type selector for my convertor:

One thing I thought about is getting LabVIEW to compile a temporary VI at edit time, storing the compiled code in a buffer on the block diagram, and finding some method to load VI's from memory if one exists. That way it can be used in an executable. Unfortunately, I don't know of any such methods.

For context, I am trying to create anonymous functions in LabVIEW to facilitate some basic functional programming concepts. I already have malleable VIs made using Call By Reference for things like map, filter, and reduce that accept a strict VI ref and an iterable (map, array, set, etc.). I also have a quick drop plugin that automates stuffing code selected from a block diagram into a new, automatically generated VI with an obfuscated name, replacing the code on the original block diagram with a strict SVR to the new VI, and saving the new VI in a top level virtual folder called "lambdas" out of the way.

My current goal is to eliminate the need to have the VI saved on disk and still be able to build executables and define the referenced code on the block diagram of the VI that will use it. I recently learned about XNodes and thought I could make a working version of the closure structure with them, but they appear to be just like vim's with VI scripting. Ultimately, they seem no better than my quick drop plugin for this.

From data postprocessing I realized that each task data are not time-synced.  

Is there any quick solution to fix this issue with my .vi?

I want to create a logic to trigger an event with Case Structure block with Greater Than block, where the "x" value for the Greater Than is input coming from one of the channels value.

I used Get Waveform Components to extract the "Y" value from waveform and wanted to use this as an input into the "x" for Greater thank block, however Case Structure does not accept this type.

Any thoughts?

I am calling this DLL cyclically by a RUST application over FFI.

Never on the first DLL call, but sometimes on subsequent DLL calls, I am hitting a segfault:

LabVIEW caught fatal signal
21.0.1f6 - Received SIGSEGV
Reason: address not mapped to object
Attempt to reference address: 0x170

I can't seem to figure out why this is happening.  It has something to do with the fact that I am needing to call the DLL several times, with little wait time in-between calls.
I suspect that the DLL is unloading, and then reloading between each call. 
And I suspect that this unloading might be creating a weird race condition with the runtime engine, where the runtime engine is still busy unloading the DLL from the first call, when the 2nd call happens.

Any ideas are welcome.  Scratching my head on this one.

I have this .vi project where I acquire data from the NI-Module and save it to TDMS. The acquisition rate for the TDMS is in the Resample Waveform block.

However when I examine the TDMS in excel it does not match the expected number of samples recorded based on the chosen acquisition rate.

I also tested it without the Resample Waveform block, when the rate is directly set in the Task, the TDMS again does not match the expected rate.

Any thoughts?

I'm currently using LabVIEW 2020 (32-bit) and I've been distributing my application by creating an installer that includes the built executable.

The problem is: users are reporting that the installation process takes at least 1 hour, and sometimes up to 2 hours to complete.
This seems extremely excessive, especially considering that the executable itself is relatively small in size.

I suspect something might be misconfigured, but I'm not sure where to start debugging this.

What would be the most efficient way to record data in sampling rates >1MS/s into the .txt?

I tried to use Write to Measurement File but after a few seconds it spits error, saying that I run out of memory.

I am currently designing a large LabVIEW application that needs to be highly modular and extensible. Its core functionality needs to be able to load and interact with dynamically loaded "plugin" VIs at runtime.

I have been exploring a few different architectural patterns, including using a VI server or an Actor framework with plugin functionality.

I would particularly like to hear from those who have successfully implemented a plugin-based system in LabVIEW. What were the main challenges you faced? Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

In the code, he was told to wire a variant to the 'variant to data' function and wire in a path constant so the output would be a path. This was later wired to a function needing a path input. So far so good. But later in the same code (in a different case) he was instructed to do the same thing but this time there was no input to the 'variant to data' function to tell it what to cast the variant data to. But for some reason, the output was still a path and he could still wire it to another function that needed a path as input. Here is a screen grab of the magical code:

The license text that shows up in VIPM does not mention any type, but somewhere says that:

"1.    GRANT OF LICENSE. I was trying to find some wording to the effect that you can use the toolkit provided you include the license file, but the part I emphasized above seems to say you can use it for "internal" (to your business) use.

First, I don't quite see how even for an internal use you can use the software without "merging" it into your own (in the sense that the code will need to be integrated to the rest to be actually used).

And second, what is the purpose of a piece of code that you cannot share with others than those in your "business"?

I am suspecting that the license file has simply been badly written.

Any hint of what to do (save for avoiding the toolkit at all cost)?

I'm interested in how the "Is session valid?" and "Is Instr?" Booleans are determined

I have tried it in different ways, putting create file inside case structure and outside of structure etc. But I am either getting only 1 video(which overwrites), or just pictures. 

Lastly I have tried with shift register and got this error: Error -1074395995 occurred at IMAQ WriteBMPFile

I have a 2D array and I would like to replace the eleventh column with the lowercase of the fifth column. I understand that it is recommended to use Array Split / Replace Subarrays and my question is, am I using it correctly? And is there any other way? Thanks in advance.

i have a problem which arose when I switched within my code from single references to a map containing a key (string) and a value (reference). The reference is pointing to an ActiveX object.

Is there any known issue with maps and references?

If the code is running earliest the second time but sometimes after a few runs (8 was my max) LV IDE has a hard crash without any error message. I got the feeling that the reference within the map is somehow messed up and the activex call is overwriting program memory. My first tries were hard crashes, another attempt showed at least something like "MEMORY_WORKER.cpp" in an error message (just appeared once).

I tried searching the changelog but couldn't find anything.

Is there a known issue in LV21?

• Using 30 sec. restart Watchdog and whacking it ~1 Hz
• Not a really complicated diagram.  
• FPGA programming mode (not scan interface mode)
• I am monitoring the memory usage and it does not appear to be increasing.
• Usually locks up 2-20 hours after start.
• Program and display completely frozen.
• Cannot connect from LV Project or MAX.
• Watchdog controller does not reboot the controller.
• Hard reset required to get the controller running again.
• NI tech support says no internal known issues reported

I am regularly releasing standalone executables of that project without a hitch.

However, the source distribution, once I open the top level VI in a copy of the project I place in the source distribution folder, after updating all paths to the new destination, ends up with many broken VIs.

Examining the source of the problem, it appears that it is due to many (if not all) VIMs in my project being replaced by VIs with made-up names (random series of characters.vi), and the Assert Type VIMs in those VIs being themselves replaced by similarly randomly named VIs, and broken.

I recall having read threads about some sort of incompatibility between VIMs and libraries, but since I did not have any problems with them during development (or application release), I am kind of at a loss as to what to do next...

Is there some literature I can read on the dos and don'ts of Source Distribution release and VIMs + libraries?

I'm terrible with regex but I can get an AI code generator to make a regular expression but I'd rather just use a LabVIEW built-in VI to be "safe".  FYI this is the regex generated by AI if anyone cares:

My base solution for this just concatinates two sets, sorts the result based on the time (X values) and finally removes duplicate samples (XY pairs) from it. This is simple to do with OpenG array VIs (sort 1D and remove duplicates VIs) or the improved VIM-versions from @hooovahh, but this is not optimal. My first optimized version runs through the two XY sets in a for-loop instead, a for loop that picks consecutive unique values from either of the two sets until there are no such entries left. This solution is typically 12-15 times faster than the base case (<10 ms to merge two sets into one set with 250 000 samples on my computer e.g.).

Has anyone else made or seen a solution for this before? It is not as generic as the array operations covered by the OpenG array library e.g., but it still seems like something many people might need to do here and there...(I had VIs in my collection to stitch consecutive time series together with some overlap, but not any that handles interlacing as well).

It would be interesting to see how optimized and/or generalized it could be solved. I have attached the two mentioned examples here , they are not thorougly tested yet, but just as a reference (VIMs included just in case...). Below is a picture of the front panel showing an example of the result they produce with two given XY sets (in this case overlapping samples do not share the same value, but this is done just to illustrate what Y value it has picked when boths sets have entries for the same X (time) value):

I'm looking for help to increase as much as possibile the speed of a function that reshape a 1D array from a 4 channels acquisition board to 4 2D array. The input array is:

where, basically, the array is the stream of samples from 4 channel, of M measures, each measure of N samples per channel per measure. First the first sample of each channel of the first measure, than the second sample of each channel....

Addtionally, I need to remove the first X samples and last Z samples from each measure for each channel (basically, i'm getting N samples from the board but I only care about the samples from X to N-Z, for each cahnnel and measure). The board can be configured only with power of 2 samples per measure, hence no way to receive from the board only the desired length.

The end goal is to have 4 2D array (one for each channel), with M rows and N-(X+Z) columns. The typical length of the input 1D array is 4 channel * M=512 measure * N=65536 samples/ch*measure; typical X = 200, Z = 30000.

This is working!

However, it appears to me that the RUST application is hanging when I try to shut it down.  Presumably, I think this might be because the LabVIEW runtime engine process and thread pool is still running.  The shared library itself isn't running any processes.

I'm curious if anyone has run into this before, and if there is a proper way to stop-calling or unload a LabVIEW DLL/SO.

Often I have floating or modal windows, and another modal window opens (either from the VI that is the first window or another async-running component) and the active modal window ends up behind the first window.  Often this second window is the file dialog.  The User ends up unable to click on the active modal window, and unable to move any other LabVIEW window.  They think the application has hung, which effectively it has.

Really, of course, I want the active modal window (that is blocking the User from all other windows) to always be on top.   How do other people get around this problem?

I recently installed the UI Tools Addon Package and now LabVIEW 2018 crashes immediately on start.  I saw a similar topic with the same package where Jim Kring was able to give some instructions privately to help resolve the issue- I would appreciate the same assistance as I have tried to uninstall all packages and reinstall LabVIEW 2018 and LabVIEW still crashes immediately.

There are a number of web browser user Interfaces for the Stable diffusion back-end. Forge, Automatic 1111, Comfy UI - to  name a couple - but the last one, comfy UI, is graphical UI.

The ComfyUI block diagram can be saved as JSON or within a PNG image. That's great. The problem is you cannot nest block diagrams. Therefore you end up with a complete spaghetti diagram and a level of complexity that is difficult to resolve. You end up with the ComfyUI equivalent of:

The way we resolve the spaghetti problem is by encapsulating nodes in sub VI's to hide the complexity (composition).

So. I was thinking that LabVIEW would be a better interface where VI's would be the equivalent of the ComfyUI nodes and the LabVIEW nodes would generate the JSON. Where LabVIEW would be an improvement, however, would be that we can create sub VI's and nest nodes whereas ComfyUI cannot! Further more, perhaps we may have a proper use case for express VI's instead of just being "noob nodes".

Might be an interesting avenue to explore to bring LabVIEW to a wider audience and a new technology.

For those of you who don't remember (or weren't even born yet when I started posting here 😄), I work for the US Navy and use a whole bunch of LabVIEW code.  We're being forced to "upgrade" to Windows 11, so figured we might as well bite the bullet and upgrade from LV2019 to LV2024 at the same time.  And then the licensing debacle began...

Due to our operating paradigm, we currently use a LV2019 permanent disconnected license for our software development. This was very straightforward back then.  But not so much with LV2024 and the SaaS situation. Add to this the fact that I can't talk to NI directly and have to go thru our govt rep for any answers.  And he and I are not communicating very well.

I'm hoping someone here has an answer to what I think should be a really simple question:  If I have a "perpetual" license with 1 year service duration for LabVIEW, at the end of that year, if I don't renew the service, can I still use LabVIEW like always, as if I still had my old permanent license?  I realize I would not have any more support or upgrades, but that's fine.

I've read thru the threads here and in the NI forum about this, but they mostly ended back when no one really knew how it was all going to shake out.  So are we locked into either our ancient LV versions forever, or are we going to be paying Emerson/NI every year for something we don't really need?

So I have this project with a lot of vi's which are saved with block diagram windows somewhat larger than the actual block diagram.

I am looking for a way to programmatically go through all these vi's and resize the block diagram window size to the size of the actual block diagram (plus some margin).

Has anyone done this? I'm looking at the different properties: BDWin.Bounds, Diagram.Bounds, but I can't really make heads or tails of it.

I need to get a VI with some Old Tabor Drivers working.  I have installed the particular drivers from NI.com but I am getting an error stating a .dll cannot be loaded.   If I open the Call Library Function Node it is expecting the .dll to be at C:\VXIPNP\WinNT\Bin\ww257x_32.dll .   Since this location does not exist for Windows 10, I tried creating that folder and putting the .dll there and that did not work.  I tried pointing to other locations as well and still no luck.  Does anyone more familiar with how .dlls should work have an pointers (no pun intended) for how to get this garbage working?

But since I've used the MD5 I've been disappointed it how long it takes to calculate an MD5. So I did some quick tests comparing the native MD5, to the OpenG MD5, against the command line version I've been using found at http://www.etree.org/md5com.html . For small files (less than 30kb) the native MD5 is relativly quick at around 50ms for one file. This is good if you are checking the integrity of a config file, but I'd rather use it as a general purpose file utility, checking the integrity of a directory of files.

Any file above 30kb and the command line version process it faster. I performed an MD5 on four 5Mb text files, and using the native MD5 it took 2,786ms, while the command line took 125ms. The OpenG wasn't a good comparison since it processed the whole file at once taking, over 30 seconds.

So I wrote an "improved" MD5 calculation VI. I think you'll be horrified when you look at the source, it just uses the command line version but it works, and alot faster than either OpenG or native. I also saved it in 7.1.

In the youtube video the person is able to make it work, but when I do it in my PC, same problem. Client makes connection but TCP listen cannot listen to that connection in server. I have uploaded that code here as well. Can someone explain to me why is this so? Thank you.
