Paul,
I'm not sure what NI told you, but that does not sound correct!!! I have the full development Suite and I had the problem. And, as I stated earlier, I performed the tasks as mentioned, it took less than 5 minutes to do, and the problem went away. I have not experienced any other problem (related to that) since.

I'm not sure what happened, but I reinstalled LV 8.6.1 and tried the patch again - backing up the "patched" files first . The patch installed just fine this time. I have been having some licensing issues since I upgraded to 8.6 last year and I think I got that resolved using a different license number when reinstalling it this morning. This little adventure helped me resolve an issue I've been fighting for over a year. And no loss of productivity, either since most of my Thursday mornings are spent in meetings.

i found this bug a few months ago. It was quite annoying at that time fighting with LV to change the limit
I have 8.6.1, installed this "patch" this morning and it killed my LV software. If customer service can't help me out it looks like I have to do a reinstall.
Update: Just got off with NI. Seems this patch is for the base development system only. I have the Pro. My bad.
I still have to remove and reinstall, though.

Quoting myself: Is that acceptable?
I read this article this morning and though of this post. Paper companies want us to print more!
I also recently got to experiment with my sister-in-law's iPad. It was actually quite nice. She had downloaded several of the free classic books and they were quite readable. You can view single pages or turn the unit sideways and view two pages at a time. There's a 'lock' at the top of the device to prevent it from matching the orientation of the iPad (vertical or horizontal).
My 9 year old daughter said "Dad, it's a big iPod touch! Can I get this instead of an iPod for my birthday?"
I have to give the iPad the nod over the Kindle or Nook; it's more expensive but is a true computing device. I think I would rather have one device over three or more (laptop, ebook, music/vid player and handheld game player).
Last year it was netbooks; this appears to be the year of the tablet. A dual core Pine Trail Atom tablet with an SSD and a 7" OLED screen will be very nice. You could even run LabVIEW on it!

Dropbox looks kinda cool. But Jott was kinda cool, too, and I got hooked on it ... then it wasn't free anymore.

This is funky behavior for a primitive. I've seen more than one bug caused by a close VI button accessible to the user. I would rather write my own VI and leave this "feature" out.

LAVA I content is being (slowly but surely) migrated to LAVA II. That may be what you're seeing.
Taking a tip from the University of East Anglia by purging raw data and leaving only "value-added" data.

If a schlub like me, holding a real 7-5 job can still find time to investigate alternatives, what does that say about all of our elected "leaders"?

Where "climate change" meets your wallet. Enter your adjusted gross income, submit and scroll down to the bottom. It will tell you how much you are going to pay for just once small part of this scam.

*sigh* I figured you'd quote that and ignore the rest of the article.

Sorry for the RSS bomb, but there's fresh news on the topic: 'No malpractice' by climate unit
From the article: "The chair has been challenged over his other interests. Lord Oxburgh is currently president of the Carbon Capture and Storage Association and chairman of wind energy firm Falck Renewables. "
This entire scam is being perpetrated by a bunch of frauds with conflicts of interest.

I do not have a "scc system".
Neither do I. My most recent attempt (out of a couple) was last year trying to get TortoiseSVN to work with just me as the developer. For some reason Subversion refuses to play nice with me and I gave up. I was the only developer and made backups every single day and archived the old ones so it didn't matter, right? Well I've been listening to the LV gods and have decided it still needs to get done. So yesterday I started playing with Mercurial. Today I installed TortoiseHG. Already I've had better luck with this setup than I ever had with SVN. And so just a few hours ago I ceremoniously uninstalled Subversion from my system (YES! )
Seems like a good time for me since I'm reorganizing and building more reuse libraries. We shall see how it goes. I'm optimistic.
-
I'm integrating Mercurial and re-organizing reuse libraries along with documentation as we speak.
I just finished cleaning up an 8-month-old mess. My code is in shambles. I don't need another headache.
You have my gratitude.

... I don't use passwords at all ... If a user wants to get in and muck around with the code... that's on them. I can't protect them from their own stupidity.
Here! Here!
Passwords. Arghhhh! I hate the damn things.
I have some code here written by a previous developer. Once in a while I'll stumble upon a vi that can only be opened with a password. And of course, I don't know the password. I have to delete the vi and recreate it the best I can.
Trust me. Judging by what I can read from this guy he wasn't that clever.
And I am the crazed psychopath who inherited his code. Fortunately for him I don't know where he lives.

Should I post this as a weekly nugget? I assumed it was well-known, but if two LAVA guys didn't know about it, that probably translates to way more 'regular' LV programmers not knowing...

From some books and documents, these two seem don't have much difference, the result of using a Functional Global Variance is the same as that of calling a sub-vi with same function, then why does LabVIEW develop the concept of Functional Global Variance? Is there any good reasons to use the Functional Global Variance instead of a sub-vi?
Thanks a lot!
I'm not sure I know what you are talking about. Do you mean "Functional Global Variable"? More info here.

I realize that the other forum members can stand up for themselves, but he *did* post this in the "Help me with this LabVIEW code I want to write" section of the forum, and not the "I've got a small job for a LabVIEW programmer" section. And then proceeded to accept free suggestions. Or rather proceeded to respond negatively to free suggestions. Definitely sending mixed messages.
We need more women in engineering.

Absolutely. I've printed it out and am going to save it as inspiration for next time we're looking to hire someone.
I did the same thing ... but tacked it up in my cube for inspiration ... next to my growing collection of "facepalm" de-motivational pictures.

Stylistically, I almost never close a passed-in reference in a subVI. I always close it in the same VI that opened/generated it. That way I don't have to worry about a reference that I think is valid actually being invalid because it was closed in a subVI somewhere beforehand.
-D
I'm the same way but I think there is more to doing it that way than just "style". I don't think I've ever seen an application where a reference was closed in a subvi. It just doesn't seem to make much sense. To me that would be a good example of code obfuscation.

What if this turns out to be nothing more than an April Fools joke?

Sweet indeed. Fight you for it.

Try these on for size!
That little white block on that last one is my 1920x1200 monitor. I'd need about nine of them side by side to see the whole thing.
At least I don't have to refactor, but try and understand and document that! If it were up to me, it would be rewritten from scratch. That may happen yet at some point.
Butbutbutbut I thought monitor manufacturers are coming out with wider and wider screens just for us LV guys.

I’ve really pushed the limit of sub panels in a LV app, and haven’t had any problems.
I’ve attached an example that uses a grid of sub panels, and in every sub panel I insert an active object of different types.
Cheers,
Mikael
Nice demo, Mikael.

"The biggest scam in history"... I thought the biggest scam in histoty ir religion.
Some of my more religious and conservative associates think Darwinism is the "biggest scam in history". But that's another thread on another forum, and it's not going to be started by me.

I think Jim is one of those rare LV gods who displays his controls as icons. Controls are displayed as icons in his book as well.
Who are we to argue with the great Jim Kring?
Maybe his eyes are not working as well as they used to.
