Applications Engineer

Job Summary:

The Applications Engineer reports to the Customer Support Manager and Operations Manager and is responsible to achieve specific technical support and production activities.

Duties and responsibilities:

Production and Installation:

  • Integrate and test company products and systems
  • Installation and training at the customer site
  • For all engineering products delivered, work with the engineering department to create the maintenance and troubleshooting guides from a user's point of view. Including system documentation, program descriptions, flowcharts and operation procedures;
  • Document exceptions and fixes for inclusion into core product;
  • Provide feedback from customer users to product team;
  • Perform QA on new product software releases;
MUST be able to travel international without major restrictions
Technology supported includes custom made test equipment, unique engineering designs.
Customer Support:
  • Diagnose, De-Bug and fix less complicated bugs using but not limited to LabVIEW, TestStand, TCL and MySQL;
  • Work with senior developers to identify and resolve complicated technical software problems, and some hardware problems;
  • Learn the Averna products and applications to be able to understand customer requests from their point of view;
  • Document frequent issues into scripted processes; create FAQ;
  • Document required bug fixes, end-user feature improvements, and operations feature improvements;
  • Understand customer urgencies and priorities, and address urgent issues quickly.
  • Provide primarily first and second tier remote customer support, troubleshooting and solutions for existing customers;

MUST enjoy customer interaction and will do that up to 40% of the time

Occasional week night or weekend work is require to support customer from different time zones and with urgent requests (approx. 15% of the time)

The chosen candidate will:

  • Develop a deep and broad understanding of Averna tools and products;
  • Use the in-house tools to track customer requests;
  • Take ownership of problems and see them through to successful resolution;
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor degree in computer science, electrical engineering or computer engineering
  • Experience with RF instrumentation is required;
  • Practical experience with LabVIEW, TestStand, TCL programming is an asset;
  • Practical experience with MS SQL and MySQL is an asset;
  • 2-5 years experience solving deployment and support issues is an asset;
  • Good general computer knowledge (e.g. Windows, TCP/IP networking, FTP) with a strong aptitude for problem solving;
  • Experience as a software engineer for test platforms or real-time software engineering;
  • Knowledge of broadband and telecommunication industries is an asset;
  • Able to read engineering design documentation (mechanical, electrical or software);
  • Other language skills such as Chinese are an asset;

Required skills:

  • Likes to interact directly with customers to achieve customer satisfaction with a "can do" attitude, ability to easily establish good relationships with customers;
  • Pro-activity, creativity, autonomy, diplomacy, open-mindedness, and patience;
  • Great listening, self motivated individual with excellent oral and written English communication skills;
  • Ability to quickly learn systems and trouble shoot with the customer live and remotely;
  • Good verbal skills for telephonic work and ability to develop well written documentation.
