Favorite Parts O LAVA

Hello all.

I (somewhat regretfully) am a new poster here on LAVA. I work as a Project Manager on the NI web team. I was a former Applications Engineer (IMAQ/Motion specialist).

So - introductions aside - I am interested in learning a bit more about the community. Most of that will be me just spending more time here (perhaps even helping out once in a while ), but I also wanted to solicit any discussion regarding community/web/NI, specifically ni.com.

I am working closely with Philip Courtois to drive specific projects on ni.com. So - Champions, power users, all - what's your favorite part about LAVA?

Welcome to LAVA

My favorite part about LAVA is that it is independent. It is not censured (NI can delete your postings for arbitrary non-disclosed reasons on the NI forums). I also like LAVA because contributions are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 License -- but, if I post on the NI forums, then NI has the right to (re)use my posting for whatever purposes they see fit (including possible marketing material), per the Terms of Use of the NI forums. I also like LAVA because it is a community created by LabVIEW users, for LabVIEW users -- it is community effort and participation at its best.

How do we love LAVA? Let us Enumerate the ways ...

1. It is "Advanced", the SNR tends to be a little better here.
   
2. It is independent of NI. We all love LabVIEW and NI, but independence is very important to the culture here.
   
3. The great Forum Features by head Chef Michael Aivaliotis
   
4. Fewer postings by HH's (Homework Hustlers)
   
5. The "Outside of the Box" sub Forums like VI Scripting
   
6. Lots more, but you have to have 50+ posts to get the secret password...

(Actually, it's not 50, it's 500 posts, then you get to make a secret pass phrase, like Michael and Jim)

Everything that Jim and Mike said - it's like Info-LabVIEW in a rich environment.

Just curious: why do you ask? Is it because you're aiming to make the NI discussion forums more like LAVA?

Sometimes we take pity on such individuals, depending on how polite they are, how good our coffee was that morning (or how the pizza is late at night), but in general, this forum tends to suffer such fools less than NI DevZone or Info-LabVIEW.

But in general, if it is:

1. Someones first post
   
2. They ask a pretty general problem
   
3. They don't ask for a very specific thing to be helped with
   
4. Their' post does not include the things they have already tried
   
5. They do not provide specifics like type of hardware, software version, etc
   
6. They ask us to essentially supply the whole answer (ie "gimme a VI or BD")
   

Usually, those posters fall in the category of HH's and they take their chances with whether they get help or get hustled off in the direction of DZ or IFLV.

Do not feed the bears (too much) in the park, it only encourages them.

(Okay, okay, I admit, I have occasionally slipped a bear a morsel or two myself, but the coffee was really good that morning...)

Hehe - I am still hard-wired from the days where I had to reply to every post (AE). It was a naive move, admittedly, but a brother is just trying to get his feet wet

then we are ex-co-workers. I was the one responsible for the NI Services websitem (as a side-job), and I developed the measx.com website when "we" got the "new name". Maybe you got the infamous "Most Experts Are Stoned" derivate from my logo?

The legal is most definitely a little intense sounding - but remember that it is driven by lawyers. . . OK I have said too much.

The TOU may be written by lawyers, but I'm sure someone at NI can guide them to fix it. The contributors which make up the community on the NI forums (and which are practically the glue which holds it together) do NOT like the fact that their postings can be taken and used elsewhere without even giving a reference to say where the information came from. I'm sure an amendment which states the source will always be referenced could be made to the TOU were the lawyers instructed to do so, although the preferable option for the users might (I'm not sure about this) be that NI has to contact the user and ask for their permission to use the information (I see how this option won't be "fair" to NI, which is the one spending the money).

BTW, why doesn't your blog appear on the list of NI blogs? Are there any other NI blogs which are not on that list?
