  1. I was using the OpenG Periodic Trigger in an application and notice that my time base was drifting. After spending some time on it and rewritting to make it a little more readable I made a change to fix what seems to be a time leak to me. The change is made where it gets the new time after a trigger has occurred. If someone would take a look and give me feedback that would be great. Could this be an update to the OpenG Time library?Periodic Trigger.zip

  2. The iPhone app didn't work for me. I had already created my profile and agenda on the computer. Everything works great from my PC and I can access the modile website on my iPhone but the app never lets me log in. I did the "Forgot my password" to double check but it still never lets me login. Not sure if it's my phone or the app?? I have a 3Gs with iOS 5.1.1. Anyone else have good luck with this configuration?

    It's like a train wreck - I know I shouldn't, but I just can't stop watching...

Actually, this guy kinda reminds me of Norm... Must be his dancing that does it.

Yeah, you owe me 2 minutes of my life back ... uggghhhh

That was in no way an attack on BenD (Sorry Ben). I just know I was surprised when I went to take the test. I passed, but there was definitely no sleeping going on. I'm sure there are faster coders out there than me (Darren - where's that video) and some of them may even have some time left at the end, but the exam was much more involved than I expected it to be after having studied the CLD practice exams (not more difficult, just a lot more to get done).

I agree which is why I failed the first time (made it with flying colors the second try though :D )

  5. QUOTE (zorro @ Aug 4 2008, 10:34 AM)

    Dear all,

I want to make a SubVI in a main LabVIEW program. My goal is that there is a "setting" button in the front panel of the main program. When I hit the button, the front panel of the SubVI jumps out. In the front panel of the SubVI, there are three Numeric controls and three Numeric indicators and an OK button. I can input numbers in the three controls. After inputing, I hit the "OK" button and these three numbers are transfered back to the main program so that these numbers can be operated in the following operation.

This is the plan. the problem is when I run the main program and hit the setting button, the front panel of the SubVI doesn't jump out but the main program does initiate the SubVI.

Dear friends, how to fix this problem? Is there a good LabVIEW book so that I can learn from it about SubVI? Is there any internet source about how to make a SubVI? Thanks a lot.

I've used this combination of Invoke node and Property node to do a similar thing.

I'll throw in my pet peaves about the editing environment. They're small individually, but over the course of the day they cause me to lose a lot of time and patience! :)

    1. There are no keyboard shortcuts for specific alignments of block diagram objects. Yes, I know you can hit Ctrl-Shift-A to redo the last alignment, but that causes me to remember what the heck the last alignment was, which is often not what I want to use this time. I would be willing to memorize a few extra keyboard shortcuts to get the alignment I want (left, right, up, down). For instance use the numeric keypad and have Ctrl-Shift-4 for left alignment, Ctrl-Shift-6 for right alignment, etc. I do this about 50 times a day (slight exaggeration), and it's always a pain point not to have an automated method.
    2. Creating block diagram space in one dimension only. I very rarely ever want to create space in two directions, because that can completely screw up the alignment of the whole block diagram. I almost always want to create space in one direction, so I have to very carefully make sure I only Ctrl-drag in one direction. One pixel off and I have to redo the operation. Very annoying.

Wow, I totally agree with both of these, it's almost like another person was typing for me

    QUOTE

Ok, I'll throw in another one which is definitely more like a feature request than a pet peeve, but it's close enough:

When you have an array control or constant, you can add or remove dimensions through the right click menu (very cool). But you can't bridge the gap between scalar and vector items in the same manner. So it's always annoying when I have an array control and I want to replace it with a scalar of the same type. I usually end up deleting the control and starting from scratch, which makes me reconnect it to the Connector Pane. Same goes for a constant. I'm tired of dropping down empty array shells to create arrays of things.

What would be really cool would be an automatic right-click menu option to do this. Right click a scalar of an appropriate type (non-waveform, non-xcontrol), and you get an option to Change to Array. Right click a 1D array and instead of Remove Dimension, you see Change to Scalar.

This would make life easier, and conceptually I think it's a pretty straight-forward continuation of the Add/Remove dimension idea.

Never thought of it that way until you said it, again I totally agree.

  7. I knew that my last post would draw you out Justin :shifty:

Now let me precursor this the fact that I am not a MAC hater, just considered to be a realist and a little bit of a Devil's advocate because there are some people at my company that would have MACs take over my very thoughts if I let them, so I have to keep my guard up :)

Depending on how you measure, it is increasing. But the real key is quality of software, profitability, and consumer mindshare, because market share is meaningless unless you understand exactly what the boundaries of the market are.

I'm guessing that they are definitely getting a surge of people that couldn't use a MAC but wanted to for business before because they couldn't run Windows before, there are some people at my company that are doing the same thing, using the MAC to run Windows for just the apps they have too.

    QUOTE

It's not an "IBM clone" when it runs OS X. And "expensive" is debatable and subjective. I don't know about you, but I buy the best tools for my job.

I don't think there any question that it's an expensive machine. I have a high end HP laptop and MBP definitely isn't a bargain compared to it. Although I will concede that it isn't just an IBM clone, that was a little inflammatory on my part :) As far as the best machine for my job, I have a chip on my shoulder about the MBP because my IT dept tried to force one on me with just XP installed because that's what I need, and I complained because MBP isn't an equal machine for a straight Windows user. Now I admit if you want to do both then it's cool, but I have no use for OS X.

    QUOTE

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by that. Apple has been in the "PC market" for over 20 years.

My mistake, I meant to say the Windows PC market.

    QUOTE

Unless by "PC market" you mean the low-margin, commodity computer hardware market where Dell/Lenovo/etc. live. That's not a market Apple has
    ever
cared about. The failure of the press and the "market analysts" to understand that is something that continues to astound me.

If you're comparing to Dell and Lenovo, don't they compare to a MacBook or a Mac Mini for price points?

In the end for this doesn't Windows still win. Everyone that purchases one of these to run both Mac and Win OS still gets to sent a check to Microsoft for its OS and MSOffice.

  8. QUOTE (crelf @ Jul 2 2008, 10:07 PM)

    I bet he's running Windows :)

Apple now makes PCs that run Windows, just like Toshiba, Dell, Lenovo, HP, etc. It's not that he switched from PC to Mac, it's more the Apple switched from Mac to PC :)

I agree, there making it sound like their market share is increasing when they are just making an expensive IBM clone. If Apple wants to enter the PC market, fine, but don't make it sound like everyone out there is switching to them.

  9. I've stayed at the Hampton Inn for 3 years.

    - good price

    - about a 2 block walk to the convention center

    - nice rooms with free broadband internet

    - a happy hour with free tap beer, wine, and snacks every evening around 5pm

    - free hot breakfast every morning to supplement NIWeek's meager one

They might not be on the hotel list but they were a couple years back and I just keep asking if they have a NIWeek discount and they give me one. They're usually comparable with the Radisson for price.

I agree that can be convenient.

    QUOTE

The number keypad on 17" Win PCs are a separate section to the right, not integrated into main keyboard, it can be pretty handy.

    QUOTE

, although I'll be the first to admit they're a bit clunky. That owes to the fact that Apple puts all their ports on the side of the machine (which means you can see them and plug/unplug stuff without climbing to the back of the machine). I have a friend who docks his machine in one of them, and he's pretty happy with it.

Those look pretty cool, at least they provide a workable option.

  11. QUOTE (Justin Goeres @ Jun 24 2008, 09:25 AM)

Sometimes I do, yeah. I may end up running mine at a lower resolution when possible, but I needed the hi-res screen because it's the only Mac that will accommodate a 1280x1024 window (the bounds of most of my deployment machines). There are several Windows machines with better resolution options than Apple offers, but then again they're not Macintoshes :P .

Doesn't the 1680x1050 screen give you enough room for the 1280x1024 window? Also, I agree that you can run at a lower resolution but flatscreens always look there best when run at their native resolution, one of the few drawbacks compared to CRTs that could run any resolution and look good.

Maybe this is a moot point if you have the laptop hooked up to an external monitor most of the time like I do (although that is tougher with MACs because of their lack of a docking connection, one of my pet peeves against them). I think their Mac Pros could be more appealing if Apple would be willing to concede to offering a setup on their laptop that caters to the business and Windows community better, like keyboard layout, number keypad on 17" models, more USB ports, built card readers, and some extra shortcut buttons that are available on most Win PCs. It always seems that I want to like Apple more than I ever do because of things like that.

  12. As far as matte vs. glossy, I can't see how anyone that has used both in an office can consider glossy. I used one for a short time and I had horrible reflection from the flourescent lights. Maybe some better screens have coatings to help this but I was really surprised at the difference between the glossy and the matte screen on my regular laptop. Now I have heard that the glossy can perform better in outside environments which can be nice for field service people so I guess you have to weigh that importance.

As for resolution, don't you guys find it a little hard to see and works with items on the screen with those high res 1920x1200 screens, especially with LabVIEW since everything is pixel based and you can't enlarge the environment. Maybe I'm getting a little old (35 and counting) :D

  13. Thanks you guys. It's one of those "the more I learn, the more I know I don't know much" kind of deals. I read the posts about the IOtech multi-scans and that's definitely good to know. Hopefully the test stations will not require more than just the 48 chanels. As of now I'm just trying to absorb everything I can about LabView and this site's been really helpful with that. I'll be sticking around for sure!

    Thanks again!

    Regards,

    Adrian

I have worked with several IOTech devices including the 1200 Multiscan (piece of c___ in my opinion). Besides the Multiscan, the rest of the equipment has worked reliably and at a good speed. Our original drivers were written here using the basic GPIB comm VIs but it did find some drivers for LV from the IOTech site I think. They were written very poorly and I didn't want to spend the time trying to figure them out. I haven't messed with our drivers here much but if I can offer some advice I'll try. So like any GPIB device, they work well with LV but writing up the drivers will take a little time.

  14. The files are in the second zip file. I had to break it up so I could upload to the site.

I can't take credit for creating this editor but I did modify it to better suit my needs. It's available from the NI site. What I like about it is it loads up an entire directory so I can do my icons in batches when my project is complete. It's easy to have a "theme" for the icons when doing them all at once.

I'll include both the original and my version. The original was written with the state diagram toolkit so it has some restrictions as far as editing goes. My version should be unlocked from that.

  15. Hi all,

I'm trying to programmatically resave a library of VIs I want to modify which I have the password for. I would like to clear all the password protection while working on it so I don't have to keep unlocking them. I know that once I unlock them I have access to all of the VIs that use the same password while running that session of LabVIEW but this project will take a while and I don't want to go through this every day.

Is there a utitliy out there that will allow me to unlock an entire library or directory? I've tried to find a property to access to do this but have had no luck.

    Thanks,

    Dan Bosdech

  16. David: you got wrapper VIs? Lucky! I worked on an Aerotech stage that came with a "LabVIEW Driver" which consisted of "naked" calls to DLLs strewn about the block diagram. To make matters worse there were many instances of the "home brew sequence structure" (For Loop + Case Structure = Sequence Structure). Sequence Structures are bad enough, but then you have to deal with a custom implementation :headbang:

This is the Data ACQ example from IOTech for their Multiscan device. It does analog input and has some Dig IO, alarms, etc. One could see how the example might be complicated to show all the capabilities but believe me it doesn't get any better as you start digging down. I think they wrote it for LV4.0 but they still sell the product new so you think they could update the darn thing

On a side note how do you guys put in your pics. I'm a little new and still learning the site. I just used SnagIt, a program to capture screen shots and added the attachments but it's a little bulky.

    Thanks,

    Dan

  17. Yeah, several years ago, back when Win98 (or was it 98SE?, memorys getting foggy...) first allowed multiple PCI video cards I did a project demo with 4 cards and 4 monitors. That got me hooked on >1 monitor.

The real reason I want a 3 head is not so much Windows or LabVIEW, but video editing. :camera: I want to edit video on 2 monitors and show the output on a TV monitor during rendering, etc. Just a new hobby.

    Cheers,

    Mike

I've had problems using multiple monitors with the VI being offscreen when I don't have the extra monitor. When I've done this, I'm using a laptop hooked to an external monitor. If I save a VI in the expanded desktop area and then go down to just one monitor, the VI ends up being way off to the side. I've found it very inconvenient to have to make sure I move the front panel to the main screen when I save it to make the VIs portable.
