Driving lines of parallel output

The problem i have is i am using the VISA programs in labview to access the parallel port and drive the 8 output lines to enable some relays. the problem is i need to keep the output bit i am driving high, so that the relay switches on and performs its task. Otherwise if i simply write the data bit output as soon as it arrives and then transmit nothing. Is this just a simple case of putting a while loop around the visa write vi and indexing the data from a counter or is there something more that can help me latch the lines once i decide to write.
