I have to chime in and say that we (me and my wife) have greatly enjoyed the LEGO games (Star Wars and Indiana Jones - with Batman coming out soon), and Mario Kart Wii.I'll also ditto Darren's remarks re Super Mario Galaxy - it's fabulous.
Jaegen
My kids rented Mario Kart wii last week, and it was really cool racing against people around the world. One of my kids spent hours trying to set a world record on one of the courses. That's one Christmas present picked out!

Sure. Here is what I did (saved as 8.0 and with a pretty icon added). I think the most important thing with documentation is to make sure every control or indicator on the front panel has a description and Tip Strip filled in and that every significant wire has a label. It is also critical that every subVI has a description. In this case, I didn't use any subVIs, but my main vi should have a description.http://lavag.org/old_files/post-8758-1219767455.vi'>Download File:post-8758-1219767455.vi
Thanks Toby, I am trying to improve my commenting skills (i.e. hammering it into my head to DO IT!). The project aspect is probably going to be the biggest challenge for me. I do 99% of my work in 7.1, so I have not really used projects. When I got 8.0 I was confused by them, and I need to learn more about them. Do you know of any resources with detailed information about them? The info included with LV is pretty crappy (as usual).
Tom, thanks for your input and analysis on this.

YES!!!George, can I please get the award for the most stupid CAR ever? It doesn't have to be a cup or a medal. A nice plaque will do fine.
Awesome Yair. Flatening it in LV8.0 drove it insane (objectively)!
Here's your trophy. A virtual trophy for what was virtually a VI.

Still off-topicThe Therac-25 used a DEC PDP-11 as shown in this wiki article.
Well it just so happens that I have a the front panel of a PDP-11/70 on my desk!
I use it a visual aide for the rookies to get an idea of what computers were like "back in the day".
Ben
Didn't every University have a PDP-11 in the late '70s? I wrote my first program on a terminal connected to one. That's one piece of history you have there.

There aren't user groups everywhere, and not everyone can go to Developer Education Days or NI Week.

For some programmers peoples lives and safety do depend on their code. LabVIEW is being used increasingly in critical process control and medical instrumentation. "Ugly Code" and Race conditions have killed people before eg. the infamous.Ugly code makes software harder to review, find bugs and test.So beware of the killer spaghetti code! -

Actually I did do most of that except the pretty icon and the LabVIEW project. I beat the rest of it into myself when I was studying for the CLD (I got a 10/10 on documentation) so it has become a habit to document as I go. I have found that even if I think I'll never look at a piece of code again - chances are I will go back to it at some point and the comments and tip strips really help figure out what I was doing at the time.Toby,
Would you care to share your effort? I don't want to look at it until I give it a try, but in particular I'd like to see your documentation style. I am trying to bone up for the CLD, and I think documentation is probably my biggest weakness. I only have LV 6, 7.1, and 8.0. Good luck on the CLA.

Now... I'll have to refrain form changing loop/frame colors. I didn't know you could do that! I can see how it would make a BD cheerful. I'm just afraid I might look back at those diagrams in a few years and wished I had never known about this feature!Yeah, I did one last year, and every time I open it I want to undo the collors, but can't afford the time (or don't want to expend it).

Eleetrika,
Please do not post .BMP files. Convert them to .PNG format (or jpg) and repost. Not many people are going to waste the time to download a 2.25MB file, much less two of them.

I once interviewed for a job as a lab manager. My first interview was the existing manager (Sam) who would be the lead lab manager. I then interviewed with his boss. The first question was "Tell me why you are better than Sam". I have no idea what my squirming answer was, but that was a great question to see how well the interviewee reacts to a tough situation.

I like the points made about certification and "best practices". I have seen some very difficult problems solved with functional LabVIEW code that was so ugly it was nearly impossible to follow. The programmers did not lack skill in coming up with useful algorithms or in making LV do what they needed, but they had no concept of efficient/expandable architectures, good documentation practices, good dataflow practices, etc.Amen. I have spent entirely too many hours totally re-writing VIs written by someone who is intelligent, but has no clue how to properly compose a LV application. Pursuing certification has vastly improved my code, which I see as validation of it's usefullness. The biggest problem I have with it is the cost of being up to date in the latest version of LabVIEW. I have been programming in LabVIEW for 7+ years, and have had the latest version for ~6months in '04-'05 and 6 months in '06.

The music on my hard drive runs across a wide spectrum. It seems kinda wierd to hear a sequence like - Dave Edmunds, Thelonius Munk, Dream Theater, Chet Atkins - but it ain't boring! Otherwise it's usually www.jazz24.org.
