  1. QUOTE (neB @ Sep 3 2008, 09:06 AM)

I think the question that really matters is "Can they field dress a moose?" (Fred Thompson, 2-Sep-2008)

More importantly, can they make a really good stew when they are done?

  2. QUOTE (jaegen @ Sep 3 2008, 04:38 PM)

I have to chime in and say that we (me and my wife) have greatly enjoyed the LEGO games (Star Wars and Indiana Jones - with Batman coming out soon), and Mario Kart Wii.

I'll also ditto Darren's remarks re Super Mario Galaxy - it's fabulous.

    Jaegen

My kids rented Mario Kart wii last week, and it was really cool racing against people around the world. One of my kids spent hours trying to set a world record on one of the courses. That's one Christmas present picked out!

    Still off-topic

The Therac-25 used a DEC PDP-11 as shown in this wiki article.

Well it just so happens that I have a the front panel of a PDP-11/70 on my desk!

I use it a visual aide for the rookies to get an idea of what computers were like "back in the day".

    Ben

Didn't every University have a PDP-11 in the late '70s? I wrote my first program on a terminal connected to one. That's one piece of history you have there.

  4. QUOTE (TobyD @ Aug 25 2008, 02:04 PM)

Actually I did do most of that except the pretty icon and the LabVIEW project. I beat the rest of it into myself when I was studying for the CLD (I got a 10/10 on documentation) so it has become a habit to document as I go. I have found that even if I think I'll never look at a piece of code again - chances are I will go back to it at some point and the comments and tip strips really help figure out what I was doing at the time.

    Toby,

Would you care to share your effort? I don't want to look at it until I give it a try, but in particular I'd like to see your documentation style. I am trying to bone up for the CLD, and I think documentation is probably my biggest weakness. I only have LV 6, 7.1, and 8.0. Good luck on the CLA.

Now... I'll have to refrain form changing loop/frame colors. I didn't know you could do that! I can see how it would make a BD cheerful. I'm just afraid I might look back at those diagrams in a few years and wished I had never known about this feature!

Yeah, I did one last year, and every time I open it I want to undo the collors, but can't afford the time (or don't want to expend it).

    Thanks for your reply!

    1. this is the local drive.

    2. what is FP?

    3. i've checked the settings on the screensaver page. i guess that's the only place i can set hibernation policy, right?

    4. no. when i came back to the computer, the user is still logged in.

    FP=Front Panel

  7. QUOTE (Norm Kirchner @ Aug 20 2008, 02:09 PM)

That must have come out in 8.0. It's not in 7.1.

    QUOTE (neB @ Aug 20 2008, 02:06 PM)

On TCP palette "String to IP" if you don't wire an input will return machines IP.

If that works for you, thanks got to Rolf, if its wrong please forgive me.

    Ben

That's what I have always used Ben.

  8. I once interviewed for a job as a lab manager. My first interview was the existing manager (Sam) who would be the lead lab manager. I then interviewed with his boss. The first question was "Tell me why you are better than Sam". I have no idea what my squirming answer was, but that was a great question to see how well the interviewee reacts to a tough situation.

  9. QUOTE (TobyD @ Aug 18 2008, 11:58 AM)

I like the points made about certification and "best practices". I have seen some very difficult problems solved with functional LabVIEW code that was so ugly it was nearly impossible to follow. The programmers did not lack skill in coming up with useful algorithms or in making LV do what they needed, but they had no concept of efficient/expandable architectures, good documentation practices, good dataflow practices, etc.

Amen. I have spent entirely too many hours totally re-writing VIs written by someone who is intelligent, but has no clue how to properly compose a LV application. Pursuing certification has vastly improved my code, which I see as validation of it's usefullness. The biggest problem I have with it is the cost of being up to date in the latest version of LabVIEW. I have been programming in LabVIEW for 7+ years, and have had the latest version for ~6months in '04-'05 and 6 months in '06.

We also bought Rayman's Raving Rabbids. Ridiculous fun for the whole family.

I forgot about that one. That is indeed hilarious, and the kids love it. yahoo.gif
