The comment that the automatic error handling is satisfied if one of the two terminals is connected seems incorrect. Please see the image below. I have tested this both in 2015 and 2017. The errors are the same at this point in time, but I don't think there's any guarantee that that will not change in the future. I plan to always connect both.
