Async Call By Reference Issue (ACBR)

I am using the ACBR and have noticed that if the UI thread of the parent vi is held up (like with a ring control showing its menu items)then the ABCR will not complete. I presume this is the result of the Set Control Value Method. Is there a way to decouple the threads to avoid this problem.
