  1. Beth and I have an adopted daughter who is 20 months old. This is our first child who inherited genes from me and Beth :)

That's just how our family got started...we adopted a baby boy, then 25 months later gave birth to another baby boy, then 22 months after that we adopted another baby boy and gave birth to a little girl about 6 weeks apart. We ended up with 4 under 4 yrs old for about a month :) The "twins" are 15 & 16 months old now...Good times!

  2. I've gotten far enough to be able to implement a VI and then return to the main sequence after implementing other threads, but I do not know how to pass information to or from these other VIs. Global variables only seem to be available in the TestStand variable space...exclusive from what the LabVIEW engine sees...is this true?

Hi James. Welcome to Lava! By passing a reference to the Sequence Context into your VI, you can access your Global variables. The code below simply checks to see if the variable exists, but browse through the other properties to see what else you can do. Hopefully this gets you going in the right direction.

To get the sequence context reference control drop an "Automation Refnum" onto your front panel, then pop-up on it and choose Select ActiveX Class --> TS.SequenceContext.

  3. I was thinking it meant something along these lines; I was a little slow on the uptake. I finally got it after it was spelled out. At least it resulted in another pun for this thread :)

Is that supposed to be "hip replace-mint (replacement)"? That's all I could come up with.

EDIT: DOH! The "click to reply directly" link in the RSS feed burned me again...I really need to look at other replies before spouting off. At least this way I got to figure it out on my own :)

  4. Obviously somebody at some point created a color box with a dimension smaller than 5 pixels, so it must be possible. But I've run out of obvious things to try. Any suggestions?

I was able to create a color box 1 pixel high in LV 8.6.1.

    1. Right click the colorbox and go to advanced-->customize.

    2. Click the wrench icon in the toolbar so you can manipulate individual components.

    3. Remove the color box from the frame

    4. Resize the frame by clicking the corner and dragging (I set mine to 1x1 pixel)

    5. Resize the colorbox by clicking the corner and dragging (I set mine to 1x48 pixels)

    6. Move the colorbox over the top of the frame so the frame is hidden.

    7. Exit and save the control.

If you add it to an array, this is what it looks like (I threw some random colors in there so you can see the effect.

  5. I've just seen them. It stikes me that the traffic light one is a lot harder (conceptually) than the others. I'd guess that the others would take me about 1 hr from scratch, but the traffic light one I'd probably have to think for an hour first!:book:

More cosmetic requirements? Or more to test your specmanship?

I actually found the security system to be the most difficult of the sample exams. It took me a while to understand exactly what they wanted.

As for the real exam, I just found that the program I was given to write required a lot more functionality than any of the sample exams. Creating the UI layout wasn't difficult because you get a picture to work from, but my event structure and state machine on the real exam had many more events and states than were necessary to complete the sample exams.

  6. Interestingly (or not as the case may be). The NI "text book" answer you can download has absolutely no documentation (no descriptions of the controls, tip-strips etc). Perhaps NI should practice what they preach.

I think it would be nice if all you guys out there that have done these exams could write a few words outlining the task given to you in your exams (i'm sure its not a car wash EVERY exam). This would give those about to take thier exams a broader view of the type and scope of tasks to expect rather than one poultry example! Maybe a separate thread?

There are actually 3 examples posted, but none of the sample solutions are very good IMHO. There is the car wash, security system, and traffic light.

They are all rather poultry...or did you mean paltry ;)

I actually thought the difficulty level of the sample exams was pretty close to the real thing, but the real test had a lot more requirements so it was harder to finish in the allotted time.

  7. Now that's interesting - I was getting my feed from http://lavag.org/index.php?app=core&module=global&section=rss&type=forums&id=1

I have tried both URLs and they both exhibit the same behavior. I may have to switch to a different reader, but I really like the way Outlook handles RSS. It has much better sorting options than anything else I've tried and I always have outlook open anyway so it is one less app that I have to run.

  8. For me, it seems to rear it's ugly head daily. If a new post comes in on day 1, I get the entire thread. If someone else posts on the same thread on the same day (after I went through and deleted), only that one post shows up. Next day, new post will cause the entire thread again. Doesn't matter if it is Lava 1.0 or Lava 2.0 threads.

This is more like the behavior I'm seeing.

I wonder if this is an outlook issue. As I said, not happening for me in Google Reader. Does deleting the item from outlook signal to outlook that it should retrieve it again next time? Doesn't make sense. RSS is just an updated XML file. It doesn't have a cache or any smarts. It just has the latest content.

I'd like to see the XML file you are linking to with evidence that it contains duplicate entries.

I'm pulling in many other feeds with Outlook and none of them exhibit this behavior. LAVA 1.0 always worked fine as well.

I think this is my XML file...Had to zip it to allow the post. As an example, you can see that this entire thread shows up in here.

    1-lava-forums.zip

  9. The issue is complicated because the answer is what crelf said at the beginning. It's only new LAVA 1.0 threads that someone replies to for the first time. However, on Saturday IPS staff did an update on one of the files that triggered another bug which cause all of the posts to appear "new". So this has started the cycle again. Sorry. Just delete your RSS and start over again, or just mark them all read. This will get ironed out in the long term.

I'm still seeing this and it seems to be getting worse. Is anyone else still having this issue? I'm deleting the same thread 4 or 5 times a day sometimes. Anytime someone posts to a thread I get the entire thread in my RSS feed. I've tried deleting and re-creating the feed, but that didn't help. This is with new (LAVA 2.0) and old (1.0) threads.

  10. Download LabVIEW 2009 (755 MB)

    Download LabVIEW 2009 (64-bit, 822 MB)

I just downloaded this and installed it, but apparently I can't activate it until it is "officially" released during NI week. I assumed that a huge announcement and download link on NI.com constituted an official release...boy was I wrong. I guess I'll have to use it in eval mode for the next few days.

  11. Maybe what we're looking for is more like tagging? It's like kudos, but with data.

I am actually just looking for kudos with data, not tagging :P I find kudos with metrics far more useful than tagging on a site the size of LAVA. Tagging only seems to work well if you have a large group actively tagging and following some sort of "best practices" when it comes to choosing the tags to use. Even if a relatively small group is actively giving out kudos, the best posts/posters will quickly rise to the top of the charts. I can see in an instant where the activity is happening and what people like to read.

  12. I've copied the Smishy Smashy functions from BD Minion and made them into a RCF plugin. It takes the selected control terminals and puts the labels on the side (right for indicators, left for controls) and stacks them up. I do this all the time, now I'll do it faster.

"smashy smashy" is one of my favorite voice commands for LV Speak. This looks like a good tool for when I don't have my headset handy. :thumbup1:

This Right Click Framework (RCF) is proving to be a powerful tool! Kudos to JKI!

  13. I have a real hard time feeling bad for somebody who got skunked while blatently fishing for kudos. And if they then get offended because you didn't vote it up? Puh-leze. That person needs to get out a little more and develop a sense of self-worth that isn't based on an arbitrary rating from strangers.

    Well put.

It also lets me discover that AQ's 29 kudos were all given to him by Darren and a lurker named 'Aristos Notifier.' It's a feature that would be nice to have.

    That's funny

I think it would be nice to be able to locate the top voted posts. That would be worth implementing.

That's better than nothing. A well used voting system is a powerful filter tool. If can see a list of the top voted posts for the last day/week/month there is a pretty good chance that post is worth reading - either because it will make me laugh or teach me something. This would be especially useful after a vacation or something where I haven't followed the site for a couple of weeks.

I can understand the desire to maintain some anonymity on the site. Still, I think the more metrics we have the more likely it is that people will use the vote system. I would still like to be able to see, for example, which posts recently received votes. If I show up to LAVA and see that my reputation points have just gone up by 20 it would be nice to know which posts are getting all the hits.

  14. It sounds a bit out there, but it's a natural process for those who are addicted to getting kudos.

I didn't realize this could become an addiction. I'm cutting myself off. No more trying to artificially inflate my kudo count.

Still, I think it's cool to see who kudoed a post. Not even my posts necessarily. If I see a post that strikes me as particularly interesting/funny/useful (or particularly offensive/stupid) I like to see who kudoed it. It gives me a little insight into the people here on LAVA...and since my company seems determined to keep me away from NI Week where I would actually get to meet some of you, those little pieces of insight mean even more.

  15. You'll be able to see who didn't kudos, and, by their absence, might consider that negative.

    That's a stretch...

Why do you really want to know who voted your post up anyway? I'm not sure I understand why that's important.

Not important...I just think it's interesting. I see voting up a post as a way of thanking the poster for something useful, funny, etc. As it works right now I have no way of knowing who finds my posts interesting enough to award me with the greatest honor available to any single post on LAVA...the vote up! (Except for you Mr. Brooks...Thank you!...+1 from me :D )
