  1. QUOTE (Val Brown @ Aug 19 2008, 11:32 AM) That's a great idea!
  2. QUOTE (neB @ Aug 19 2008, 08:58 AM) That's a terrifically horrible question, and frankly none of the interviewer's business - I'd consider a question like that borderline discrimination. If you really want to know more about the "candidates character and how they juggled demands of their time" then ask them direct questions about examples they can give to illustrate that. Being direct is the best route.

QUOTE (electrika @ Aug 18 2008, 01:05 PM) QUOTE (TobyD @ Aug 18 2008, 01:13 PM) We are going to need a lot more information. I agree with TobyD, but you might want to have a look at the NI motion pages to start with.
  4. QUOTE (Tom Bress @ Aug 18 2008, 11:47 AM) Oh well, it was worth a try
  5. QUOTE (gmart @ Aug 18 2008, 10:31 AM) True true
  6. QUOTE (Tom Bress @ Aug 18 2008, 08:24 AM) Congrats mate - welcome to the club QUOTE (Tom Bress @ Aug 18 2008, 08:24 AM) Man, what an NI Week. I got bumped to first class on the flight to Austin, took the CPI training, gave a talk, won the Wii at the LAVA BBQ, and passed the CLA exam. You're right - that's far too lucky for one person. Please send the Wii back.
  7. QUOTE (NeverDown @ Aug 18 2008, 09:22 AM) I'm a little confused - do you work for Accurev?
  8. QUOTE (PaulG. @ Aug 17 2008, 09:37 PM) they do look pretty cool... Anyway, yes we've seen these cropping up and are dealing with them on a case-by-case basis. Please hold your toungue and we'll get to lacing up the sole of the issue ASAP... The thread should be gone soon (not so soon that I can't order me some of them fine shoes - I wonder if they do loafers too?) Quick note: if you find anything like this in future, then please just go ahead and click the "! REPORT" button to send a message to an admin.
  9. QUOTE (Jim Kring @ Aug 17 2008, 07:54 PM) You've been in the US for too long - Stephen Colbert would be proud
  10. QUOTE (jgcode @ Aug 17 2008, 06:51 PM) Ain't that the truth! QUOTE (Jim Kring @ Aug 17 2008, 07:18 PM) As crelf alludes to, most work comes from having great solutions, created by skilled engineers, and a track-record of success. Making sure that your team and organization stay sharp is what enables this process. Certification might not be a great value for every team, but it sure is for ours. I couldn't have said it better myself
  11. QUOTE (Yair @ Aug 17 2008, 01:18 PM) I used to think that too, but that only applies when the customer cares about the tools used to complete the product. In our example, we use NI products extensively to create test solutions, but in our chosen marketspace, not many of our customers care what tools and/or DAQ hardware that we use - they're more interested in the value-add that our test experience can bring to the table. Sure, sometimes customers' engineering staff are psyched that we have a bunch of NI-certified resources on staff, but that rarely wins us business. I supposed it's the same as having certs on your resume - it can't help, but it's not necessarily the deal-maker.
  12. QUOTE (Val Brown @ Aug 16 2008, 05:31 PM) Good stuff.
  13. I think we're agreeing and now just arguing semantics. That said, in my experience, there are so many things that I look for in a candidate that certifications have never been the only things that I've been forced to rely on to differentiate them. In your example: QUOTE (jgcode @ Aug 16 2008, 02:38 PM) Yes, I would absolutely look at grades and references, amongst a gah-zillion other things, including (often most importantly) their interviews. Candidates might look very similar on paper (as your example suggests), but, in my experience, there are never so similar in an interview that I would ever have choose one over another due to their grades alone. In summary, yes - certifications, amongst many many many other things, can be used when differentiation between job candidates.
  14. QUOTE (Val Brown @ Aug 16 2008, 10:23 AM) What about attaching are you struggling with? Are you getting an error message? Maybe LAVA doesn't accept *.lvproj files. Try zipping it and then attaching it instead.
  15. QUOTE (Val Brown @ Aug 16 2008, 01:25 AM) Hey Val - can you post your lvproj file? Maybe we could try to give you some pointers...
  16. QUOTE (jgcode @ Aug 15 2008, 07:34 PM) That's not what LV_FPGA_SE is saying. Sure, if all else is equal then selecting or denying a candidate based on certifications might be appropriate, but, paraphrasing LV_FPGA_SE, certification isn't the only thing you should consider when hiring someone. That said, I've hired a lot of people in my career, and I've never been in a situation where "all else" has been equal.
  17. QUOTE (Val Brown @ Aug 15 2008, 06:00 PM) Thinking aloud: I wonder if you could just copy the build-related portion of the source lvproj xml file to the target lvproj xml file?
  18. QUOTE (NeverDown @ Aug 15 2008, 04:51 PM) I don't know about your grandfather's SCC, but my grandfather's SCC is freakin' awesome! PS: just posting about how one thing is better than another provides very little value to the community if you don't tell us why. We're all here to learn from each other, so please share what you know. Perhaps a feature comparison? Maybe a list of a few features that Accurev has that SVN doesn't?
  19. QUOTE (James N @ Aug 15 2008, 09:41 AM) Not at all I know that you were slightly taking the piss, but I needed to add that little disclaimer to clarify to anyone esle reading the thread.
  20. QUOTE (JDave @ Aug 14 2008, 08:06 PM) Nice! But it's missing something... like a logo! http://lavag.org/old_files/monthly_08_2008/post-181-1218760898.png' target="_blank"> Hmmm - when people install this icon editor, maybe we could add a little button to the NI icon editor that allows users to switch to the LAVA one?
  21. QUOTE (jgcode @ Aug 14 2008, 07:40 PM) I'm not going to go into it too much either, but my biggest blue with the CLA is the spec/requirements/whatever. I'm used to correctly formatted requirements documents and specifications, and the one that I got in a recent recert was pretty poor. I found it pretty difficult to wade through to separate the requirements from design suggestions (yes - I've already reported this issue to NI). It's difficult enough putting a comprehensive architecture together when you have to spend a lot of time rewritting the spec to be actual requirements. Disclaimer: my company has a talented group of systems engineers who concentrate on requirements gathering, so once it reaches me it's very well defined, bound and traceble. Maybe I'm just spoilt PS; the CLA recerts (I've done more than I'd care to count) are a lot different to my original certification years ago: a 4 hour essay-based paper (yes: paper! No computer permitted. I'm surprised the assesor could read my handwritting )
  22. QUOTE (jgcode @ Aug 14 2008, 07:53 PM) Yeah - I thought so, but the flow of the converstation jumped from the OO course to the Advanced course with no marker QUOTE (jgcode @ Aug 14 2008, 07:53 PM) I actually have posted whether there is a future course run by Mr Endevo in Australia (presumably over East) But alas no reply as everybody was at NI week I guess? Or nobody likes me? I am going with the later... Safe bet Seriously though - I'd post on an ni.com discussion forum. Mike is a LAVA member, but I'm pretty sure that he doesn't have much direct control over NI course scheduling. Oh, and keep nudging your FSE (maybe call the DSM in Sydney too...) QUOTE (jgcode @ Aug 14 2008, 07:53 PM) Hopefully it will get rolled out to Aus soon - mind you the cruise looks sweet. Is this legit? Or has someone been smoking the crack pipe again? You're not the first to say that (in fact, use that exact terminiology) - yes, it is legit  One of the awesome things about the gulf there near Galvaston is that it's shallow and warm, so if you fall overboard after a few too many Swan Exports, she'll be right!
  23. QUOTE (James N @ Aug 14 2008, 04:31 PM) Not that I'm sure that this is what you're insinuating, but for the record: neither I nor my employer is in cahoots with JKI. We certainly do have an interest that VIPM is top-notch, but that's because we depend on it to help us achieve LabVIEW development environment configuration management.
  24. QUOTE (Jim Kring @ Aug 14 2008, 12:19 PM) Thanks for the plug on this, crelf! No thanks needed - it's a great product and I wouldn't plug it if I didn't beleive that.
  25. QUOTE (AnalogKid2DigitalMan @ Aug 14 2008, 11:39 AM) Sounds like the LabVIEW 8.6 "Diagram Cleanup" function arrived just in time...
