  1. QUOTE(BrokenArrow @ May 7 2007, 11:09 PM) Holy crap - that's got to be some kind of record!
  2. QUOTE(chrisdavis @ May 7 2007, 01:29 PM) It is, but I didn't want to hijack the thread: I figured a general upgrading thread was importnant to see on it's own. QUOTE(chrisdavis @ May 7 2007, 01:29 PM) I personally think this topic might make a good wiki article. I'm sure you'll get lots of responses so I'll throw my two cents in too. That's an excellent idea: are you volunteering? I'm a bit busy writting the http://wiki.lavag.org/index.php/Custom_LabVIEW_configuration_file' target="_blank">Custom_LabVIEW_configuration_file wiki at the moment, and if anyone has a spare ten minutes, I agree that this thread could be an inpotant wiki article...
  3. QUOTE(Pablo Bleyer @ May 6 2007, 11:19 PM) I think that's esoterically true for any upgrade of any software - you need to consider the motivation behind upgrading, and not do it "just because a new version came out". I had a customer once (no names) who we about a week away from production (yes, that's right, I said production), and a new major version of LabVIEW came out - they thought it was kind-of like using Adobe Acrobat Reader: all you need to do is install the new version and everything will work just fine, right? Sure enough, it didn't, and the production timetable needed to be adjusted So, here's the start of a list of what I consider to be valid reasons for upgrading any software (it's just a start, so please feel free to add your own suggestions!) You've got an issue that the new version will fix (and hopefully not create other issues that you can't workaround) There's features in the new version that you need to use You need support from the software company, and they don't support the older version anymore Newer required external components (drivers, OS's, hardware, etc) don't work with your old version, forcing your hand to upgrade
  4. QUOTE(hooovahh @ May 5 2007, 03:09 AM) I sit corrected.
  5. QUOTE(tcplomp @ May 5 2007, 02:41 AM) Great point - I don't think you should have to speak any language in particular, just be aware that you'll get fewer readers if you don't post in English.
  6. QUOTE(Michael_Aivaliotis @ May 5 2007, 02:33 AM) The LAVA Premier Option is to buy Setup2GO for $68.95 and get a free* LAVA Premium Membership! *it's easy: just pay $29 to "Setup2GO" and $39.95 to "LAVA"
  7. QUOTE(hooovahh @ May 5 2007, 12:16 AM) Bring it on QUOTE(Michael_Aivaliotis @ May 5 2007, 02:28 AM) All of a sudden everyone's afraid to have a sense of humor? hooovahh's post (I think?) was partly an inside joke that perhaps should be explained a little more: he works with me and his comment might be more of a commentary on my office banter of the last few days more than anything else
  8. QUOTE(robijn @ May 5 2007, 01:27 AM) LAVA is a Mike-ocracy, not a democracy  Mike's always been more than patient and open to listening to our suggestions - personally I like the way it is (but that could be because I grew up in a fedral constitutional monarchy. Come to think of it, that would make Mike my King... Long live the King! Long live the King!) QUOTE(Jim Kring @ May 5 2007, 02:00 AM) One thing that seems to add noise is the use of text/instant message abbreviations (e.g., "plz u help me")... Banning text-speak would be pretty difficult to police, and I'm not sure it would acheive much. I don't think text-speak itself is the issue - perhaps I don't like it because it usually goes hand-in-hand with HHs Whilst I don't like too much text-speak, I can usually look past it, just like I can look past improper grammar - each to their own.
  9. QUOTE(i2dx @ May 5 2007, 12:52 AM) You're welcome
  10. We're probably hijacking the thread, but when I need to create a custom (non-LabVIEW) installer, I use Setup2Go from SDSSoftware - it's interface is very similar to InstallShield, it's very easy to use, highly configurable and the free version is fully functional (it only costs $29 to get rid of the nag screen).
  11. QUOTE(hooovahh @ May 5 2007, 12:16 AM) That said, I don't think guidelines apply so strictly in the http://forums.lavag.org/LAVA-Lounge-f47.html' target="_blank">LAVA Lounge - nothing's sacred in there...

QUOTE(Tomi Maila @ May 3 2007, 11:35 PM) ...or anything really - LabVIEW is a dataflow language, meaning that a node won't execute until there's data at all of it's inputs, so the second loop will wait for an uotput of the first loop.
  13. QUOTE(Noxious @ May 3 2007, 12:36 PM) The LabVIEW Enterprise Connectivity Toolkit is a LabVIEW add-on that includes three individual toolkits. They do a bunch of things including some pretty advanced statistical stuff, as well as create/write/read databases. You can find out more about it here.
  14. QUOTE(Jim Kring @ May 3 2007, 10:50 AM) Are you trying to tell us that yen's not a Transformer?!?!
  15. QUOTE(Michael_Aivaliotis @ May 3 2007, 09:37 AM)
  16. QUOTE(Tomi Maila @ May 3 2007, 06:27 AM) Absolutely - I have no problem helping out members with homework - I've done it many times, but if you're doing homework and you don't tell us then I think you're misrepresenting yourself.
  17. QUOTE(yen @ May 3 2007, 05:41 AM) I don't agree - being a LabVIEW newbie isn't necessarily the same as being a HH. IMO, we really really want more newbies, we don't want HHs.
  18. QUOTE(i2dx @ May 3 2007, 05:12 AM) That's a great way of putting in - all related to the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nyquist_rate' target="_blank">Nyquist Rate.
  19. QUOTE(Michael_Aivaliotis @ May 3 2007, 03:56 AM) nahhh - I wouldn't worry about it - it just gives us something to pick on and have a laugh at...
  20. QUOTE(i2dx @ May 3 2007, 02:51 AM) I totally agree - if it's not an out-of-the-box feature of the forum software then I don't think it's fair to ask Mike to code it in.
  21. QUOTE(Mike Ashe @ May 3 2007, 01:57 AM) Very well put
  22. QUOTE(eaolson @ May 3 2007, 01:15 AM) Go http://forums.lavag.org/member-list.html' target="_blank">here and search on "Total Posts" in "Descending Order".
  23. QUOTE(Gary Rubin @ May 3 2007, 12:35 AM) I agree, and that's what a lot of this arguement is about: people get emotive and agressive, not necessarily to send a message to the thread poster, but often to increase their alpha male status in the community. This practise (one that I've been guilty of in the past) has no place at LAVA, and I beleive is was the motivation behind the "some posts have been downright mean" post that Mike wrote. QUOTE(Gary Rubin @ May 3 2007, 12:35 AM) I understand that this is how everybody feels about basic questions, but Ben, dannyt, dsaunders, and I have all remarked recently that we have doubted whether our questions are worthy of LAVA... Yes, we want people to think before posting, but we also don't want them to be afraid to post. I agree - if you've followed the guidelines, no one should ever be afraid to post. Even an odd guideline broken here or there is usually over looked. But continuosly breaking them will draw negative attention - if you look at the threads we're talking about, that's what's happened: the original poster has reapeatedly and continuously flouted the guidelines and more experienced LAVA memebers have started but curteously asking them to refer to the guidelines and try to guide them in the right direction, to no avail. I understand that you and the other posters you listed have been concerned about whether you're worthy to post on LAVA, and I can most strongly assure that, as long as you follow the guidelines, you ceratinly are.
  24. People - this discussion has gone off an a tangent that I think has little to do with the original thread: IMO this has nothing to do with whether you're "good enough". In summary: It's about HOW you ask the question. It's about weeding out HHs misrepresenting themselves. It's about RingTFM before you post. It's about posters trying something out before they expect others to do the work for them. It's about learning, not regurgitating or plagiarising. If you follow the guidelines then you'll be welcomed with open arms, irrespective of whether you think your question is a stupid one or not. If we dissed all those members that have asked what we think is a stupid question, then none of us would be here.
