  2. A little rant here, this is something I've been thinking about for awhile and I would like some feedback: I don't recycle. If I did I would put absolutely everything in the recycle bin and I would like to see a civil protest movement to do just that. Why? Because recycling is not something that people should have to think about, and it's too important to leave it to joe six pack. Recycling should not involve average citizens having to figure out whether something should or shouldn't go...

      >> Having rules without enforcement is nonsensical

That's the only thing that I'd agree with. The rest reminds me of Mel Gibson, as William Wallace, saying "Slaves are made in such ways."

No. I disagree with the use of agression to enforce your will. You used the word "smoothly", which is rather subjective. I disagree that washing my trash makes society run "smoothly", perhaps you disagree with me. Which of us is justified in using force to get our way? http://wiki.mises.org/wiki/Principle_of_non-aggression

It would be reasonable to defend your person/property in the absence of a state, but it would not be reasonable (morally defensible) to use force to coerce me to wear a particular hat or wash my garbage (unless I was dumping it on your property in a pre-agreed-upon arrangement).

I limit my discussion of "unfree" consequences to the state because that is the only entity that seeks to limit my harmless actions. My neighbors may not be impressed with me, but I should be reasonably confident that they wouldn't bop me on the head and carry me to a prison cell.

You're confusing "free" with "able". I'm not free if there's the possibility of a state-costumed goon getting involved. I'm not free to preemptively hit someone else (unless, of course, I'm the State), nor should I be. I am free to wear a hat. I'm able to do both.

      1. Yes, but it would have to benefit me.

      2. Nobody represents me; anybody that would use the coercive power of THE STATE to control the rest of us is reprehensible. I reject your worldview and substitute my own!

I'm not a free man for a whole host of reasons (tax, copyright, motorcycle helmet and seat-belt laws...), but "table manners in a restaraunt" isn't one of them. I am free to choose not to patronize any restaraunt that has requirements that I don't like. On the other hand, sorting my garbage requires me to make room in my house for seperate bins, put the appropriate material in each bin (and in many municipalities, wash it first) and deliver it in the government-proscribe...

I'll give you half of that, but I believe I should get to decide what my "part" is. Lots of things become profitable if you use slave labor (ask the administrators of American prisons.) I'm not a free man if I'm forced to sort my garbage, and the natural outcome of this is that requirements to sort trash will become law (force).
