Michael Aivaliotis Posted May 22, 2003 Report Posted May 22, 2003 Does anyone have some suggestions for how one would go about measuring the thickness of Ice? This would be ice that is covering a hard surface and it would be several inches thick. Accuracy down to a mm is required? Quote
datamedic Posted July 15, 2003 Report Posted July 15, 2003 My first thought would be ultrasound... Quote
JackHamilton Posted January 7, 2004 Report Posted January 7, 2004 Yup, Ultrasound, but the ice consistency must be pretty good. Unless you have a routine to deal with numerous echos of the different strata. You can buy these off the shelf. Quote
jbrohan Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 QUOTE(Michael_Aivaliotis @ May 22 2003, 01:18 PM) Does anyone have some suggestions for how one would go about measuring the thickness of Ice? This would be ice that is covering a hard surface and it would be several inches thick. Accuracy down to a mm is required? Is this to measure the flatness of a hockey rink for example. Do you need a gadget to attach to a Zamboni (Impressive instrument for resurfacing skating rinks) to draw a map of surface irregularities, with the assumption that the underlying surface is flat. I'm always interested in projects, but a few more clues would be welcome? John Quote
LAVA 1.0 Content Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 check with Keyence. Lots of cool sensors. Not sure but I never asked tham about ice. Ben Quote
AnalogKid2DigitalMan Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 Ultrasonics or pulsed radar ($). Drilling or heated probe insertion depth monitoring until it hits the harder surface. Quote

LAVA 1.0 Content Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 I'm just glad no one mentioned anything about using the parallel port for digital I/O! Quote
AnalogKid2DigitalMan Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 Ahh, Zombie topic, I didn't notice the date either. The thread floated to the top, just like ice! Probably no need to measure ice thickness anymore, since it has melted due to global warming. Quote
