  1. QUOTE (Ben Zimmer @ Oct 28 2008, 11:00 AM) I looked into the teams in Oakville a couple of months ago. (Used to live just down the road from Appleby College) The presentation at NI Week got me pretty fired up to get involved. Unfortunately some pretty big projects came up at work and I didn't feel I'd be able to commit the time required for this round. Hopefully I'll be able to get involved at some point though.
  2. QUOTE (TobyD @ Oct 23 2008, 12:40 PM) This is a great idea, one that really helped with my last two projects. I still have an "older" laptop that I do a lot of work on. So while my newest projects are usually 1280x1024, little lappy can only do 1024x768. A tab container or a decoration that is exactly the size of my full screen can help keep me from messing things up when I'm working in a different resolution than the final target.
  3. Very cool. These remind me a little of buttons I made for some abandonware we used to use. Gimp had a tool that made creating cool buttons really easy. Now that Gimp has gone 32 bit, it's probably even better. These are nice though.
  4. QUOTE (Michael_Aivaliotis @ Sep 23 2008, 02:53 PM) The fact that people actually voted for George Bush fascinates me. (Then again, I was equally fascinated when Stephen Harper took office in Canada)
  5. This reminds me a little of something I heard on the radio here (In Canada) this morning. They're bailing out the banks. But they stopped short of rescuing home owners from defaulted mortgages because that would be socialism.
  6. QUOTE (sam @ Aug 4 2004, 03:22 PM) Very cool.
  7. QUOTE (Anders Björk @ Sep 11 2008, 03:09 PM) I guess it was just that floating point error that was messing me up. I think I've found a way to make the ramp.vi work for me. Thanks. QUOTE (Yair @ Sep 11 2008, 03:42 PM) That's a basic rule of floating-point math. You can't represent a fraction like 0.1 exactly. I knew it would probably end up being a stupid question. But for some reason I couldn't even get things coerce properly for me either today.
  8. QUOTE (eaolson @ Sep 11 2008, 03:32 PM) I agree this isn't the best. The Rate is only variable while I'm testing. It will be hard coded.
  9. At the risk of looking even stupider than I feel right now, I really need to figure out what I'm doing wrong here. Problem: Pneumatic brake needs to have changes in pressure ramped slowly to keep oil from squirting out. Solution: Seems easy. I've got a "Brake Request" and a "Brake Output". When the two aren't equal, I add or subtract at a given "Rate" until they are both equal. Unexpected Problem: It just doesn't work. No matter what I do, I can't quite get it. Either I'm shooting past my setpoint by my rate nearly every time. Or when I try to go to zero, I end up with some super-dooper-small-but-not-quite-zero number. I've tried using a state machine. I've dividing the difference by rate and using a for loop. And finally I've tried what I've posted here. The sub VIs are nothing more than a simple add or subtract function. This latest one still shoots past occasionally. And I always get that not quite zero when trying to get there. Typically the "Rate" I'm using is either 0.1 or 0.01 I'm not sure if subtracting by 0.01 many times builds up some kind of "error" that prevents me from ever getting to zero. I don't know why this has been such a problem today. But several other programmers here have looked at it and can't figure it out either. Things like this really shake my confidence and ruin my day. Can anyone tell me what's going on here? It seems so simple what I want to do, yet nothing I've tried so far is working. :headbang:
  10. Submitted my request. Don't know what it is yet. But it sounds interesting and all the cool people are doing it. I must have it!
  11. QUOTE (Omar Mussa @ Aug 19 2008, 09:03 AM) I appreciate your response. But the obvious, "Buy a bigger hard drive" isn't really what I was looking for. What I'm wondering is; Will I be okay with replacing my 8.5.1 installation with 8.6? I have a couple of projects that were deployed on 8.5.1 But because those applications are tied completely to one-off hardware, I can't actually run that completed code on this laptop anyway. Although I may want to modify small things or perhaps a SubVI in the future. With 8.6 installed, could I not modify the code and Save for Previous version? Or am I asking for trouble?
  12. I've got a bit of a dilemma. My new 8.6 Developer Suite was waiting for me when I got back from NI Week. I really want to install it and take advantage of some of the new features. But I only have about 7G left of hard drive space on my trusty lappy. Seeing as how it's possible to save for previous versions, is it necessary to keep both 8.5.1 and 8.6 installed on the same machine if I want to provide occasional support for a couple of 8.5.1 programs?
  13. Occasionally I like to listen to music when I'm working on code. For online streaming CBC 3 has always been a favorite. I also like the R3-30 Podcast from the same place. When I'm feeling bluesy, I like Blue Ears But when I'm working on something tricky, or trying something for the first time (which is quite often) I tend to prefer absolute silence. (Or the horrified screams of my victims)
  14. QUOTE (Omar Mussa @ Aug 9 2008, 04:50 PM) You've got a winking smiley at the end here. But I don't think it's a bad idea at all. I'll bet that last session I attended could have filled one of the smaller ballrooms at least. To be honest, I was a little annoyed that they let so many people in that small room. Being the safety guy at my work place, I couldn't help but think of how far we had exceeded the maximum safe occupancy for that room. Not to mention that the door constantly opening made it difficult to hear what was being said even from where I was sitting. It was a great presentation though. And one that I came away with stuff I didn't know that I could begin using right away. Kudos!
  15. QUOTE (Val Brown @ Aug 6 2008, 03:38 PM) One of the things they've talked up in the release is that all the toolkits are also re-released on the DVD. If you just download LabVIEW without installing the associated toolkits, my guess is it probably won't recognize your previously installed ones. At one of the panels I was at today, someone asked if multiple versions of toolkits will now be supported. The guy running the panel said yes. But did not go into details. Again I'm guessing these multiple "versions" mean you're installing the new toolkits into your 8.6 Folder. I don't think you'll be able to just re-install existing kits into 8.6 as well as where it currently resides...but it might be worth a shot. Otherwise, you'll probably have to uninstall them from your older release and re-install them to 8.6 Which will likely be a problem if you still want to develop or support pre 8.6 code.
  16. QUOTE (mballa @ Aug 6 2008, 12:47 PM) I could probably upload a picture when I get back to the hotel. But a quick description would be tall, pony tail, sunglasses (I wear them most of the time) And today I'm wearing a Fastenal baseball cap. (I woke up with terminal bed-head)
  17. Great BBQ guys! It was a real pleasure to finally meet a few of you in person. Not to mention that one never gets tired of hearing things like, "You're younger than I expected". Here's hoping I bump into a few of you guys again sometime this week.
  18. I was just about to ask what this "Gingerman" thing was. But I looked it up first. Ooooo.....beer. I think I'm going to have to visit that place. I do see a few beers that aren't on their list though. That's the "strongest beer in the world" brewed right near where I live in Oakville. 14,15, and 16% and that's not distilled or fortified. If I decide to actually bring carry-on luggage, I may try and bring a few bottles down with me.
  19. Hi Ben, Figuring out how to talk to a serial device can be tricky. It seems I go through just about the same old struggle with each new device. Unfortunately I don't really have time to read through all the documentation you posted a link to. Neat looking device though. Are they expensive? This online ascii table may be of some help to you http://www.asciitable.com/ The way you have send the commands reminds me a little of working with IAI cylinders. I had a heck of a time getting them to work right. But the "codes" for that device was quite different from what you're sending. I some things on the NI boards here and here I think the programmer here had to send similar commands to his device. The code posted on the second link is a bit difficult to look at. But apparently it was working. Good luck with your project. QUOTE (BenD @ Jul 31 2008, 11:31 AM) I got them to open and resaved them.
  20. No Twitter here. In fact the only thing keeping my cell phone in one piece is the wire to the display and piece of duct tape. (Yeah I'll get a new one...but this one still works) <br /><br />Not sure how high everyone else's expectations are. But I remember seeing presentations of yours years ago and I thought they were great. I'm looking forward to seeing this one at NI Week.
  21. Sweet. I just heard a great interview the other day on Sounds Like Canada with Dave and Ian Thomas. (Ian wrote that forever FM radio classic, "Painted Ladies") What a great pair of guys. Dave can't help but be funny. I just watched the clip and it sounds like Dave's voice. But it doesn't sound like Rick's voice. Also, I wonder if all the product placement is a spoof....or the real thing? *edit* Found a press release. http://news.animaxent.com/Animax-Bob-And-D...ase20080618.pdf Looks like I was wrong on Dave's voice. Neither of the two are doing voices for the show.
  22. Ok. I think I sent the money today. But PayPal was anything but a "Pal". And now I can't log in at all. (Tried several different DNS servers, browsers, etc. No joy.) So, all I can do is hope it went through and keep trying to check on it.
  23. QUOTE (crelf @ Jul 24 2008, 03:42 PM) It wouldn't be the first time I've been slapped. QUOTE (crelf @ Jul 24 2008, 03:42 PM) You can find all-things-NI-Week2008 here. I guess I just wasn't finding my way to the correct Evite page that had all the information on it. Thanks. PS. If you still really feel the need to slap me, just let me get a few Rolling Rocks into me first.
  24. Looks like this is going to be my first NI Week as well. Didn't look like it was going to happen until the last minute. I'll be there from Sunday night on and staying the Omni. (I heard it was the 'party' hotel) Looking forward to meeting new folks and catching up with a few I've not seen in awhile.
  25. I must be just missing it.... But what date and what time is the BBQ being held?
