  1. QUOTE (simplemaan @ Aug 22 2008, 02:34 PM) I have some odd inkling that a positive number is an error, whereas a negative number is a warning, but maybe that's how it used to be a long time ago - I can't find any references to back that up...
  2. QUOTE (Rammer @ Aug 22 2008, 02:48 PM) Are you sure it's GOOP? Or is it LVOOP, dgGOOP, OpenGOOP...? QUOTE (Rammer @ Aug 22 2008, 02:48 PM) I was not directly including the .lvclass file... OK - it's LVOOP. Just so you know, GOOP and LVOOP are not interchangable terms.

QUOTE (MJE @ Aug 22 2008, 03:32 PM) Clarification: LabVIEW front panels are real windows and have hWnd references.
  4. QUOTE (jlokanis @ Aug 22 2008, 01:44 PM) I'm short on time at the moment, so I'll leave all my comments for others to make, but here's some history behind why that one whon't happen: the language is not called "G" - that's trademarked by another language that is actually truly called "G". Code written in LabVIEW is often referred to as "G" code, but that's because people are abbreviating "Graphical", not because "G" is the name of the language.
  5. QUOTE (neB @ Aug 22 2008, 01:34 PM) Preeeeetty! Slightly Off-Topic: has anyone else used http://sine.ni.com/nips/cds/view/p/lang/en/nid/12511' target="_blank">Lookout? I did a project with it years ago, and (when used appropriately) it was a great fit...
  6. I'm so glad we broke this into a separate thread This arguement has been going for years, so what I'd love to see is a list. I want both pros and cons for the sequence structure, which we can later make into a LabVIEWwiki article.
  7. QUOTE (Raymond Tsang @ Aug 20 2008, 08:49 PM) Is you disk set to power down after a timeout? (ie: powersave) Can you post the code? Or at least a screenshot of the general area where the error is generated?
  8. QUOTE (Tom Bress @ Aug 21 2008, 01:25 PM) Wouldn't it be cheaper and faster to just take the recert?
  9. QUOTE (neB @ Aug 21 2008, 10:07 AM) But the recertification is a pretty efficient and cost effective method of demonstrating continued proficiency. What other methods are y'all suggesting?

  11. QUOTE (ASTDan @ Aug 20 2008, 05:46 PM)
  12. QUOTE (ASTDan) QUOTE (Tom Bress) The PE is... Thanks for the explination gents - that was exactly what I was after.
  13. QUOTE (Tom Bress @ Aug 20 2008, 03:49 PM) Here comes another thread hijack - I've heard of the PE membership here in Michigan, and I'm at a loss to really understand what it means. I cruised the website and I think the most I could find out was that it's a group of folks that like to network the synergies (eg: the mission of MSPE is to "promote the ethical, competent and licensed practice of engineering, and to enhance the professional, social and economic well-being of its members"), but what does a Professional Engineer certification really mean? To bring it back on topic a little, if I had to choose between two candidates, why would I choose a PE over a non-PE? Also, I don't see anything about certification requirements to join - is it just a "I work as an engineer and here's my entrance fee"-style application? PS: The link to the "in-line application" on this page is broken.
  14. QUOTE (jlokanis @ Aug 20 2008, 02:11 AM) That might be true (don't know without any metrics), but that doesn't make it unuseable. I'm working on a project at the moment that does a *lot* of .net calls and it's easily acceptable for what I need. I know, I know: apples and oranges QUOTE (MJE @ Aug 20 2008, 08:57 AM) Yes, LV can use .NET, but I'd hardly call it acceptable performance for anything but the most basic functionality. Have you talked to NI directly about your issue? There might be something they can help with, or point you in a direction that'll ease your pain.
  15. QUOTE (Pollux @ Aug 20 2008, 03:23 AM) ...and we have another topic schism! I know there's been a lot of discussion over the years about how sequence structures aren't inherent to the dataflow paradigm, and I've met a lot of people that have completely sworn-off them, but I think they're like everything else in LabVIEW - as long as they're used appropriately, they're OK. :!: I strongly suggest that this topic go to a new thread.
  16. QUOTE (jgcode @ Aug 19 2008, 08:07 PM) About 25 years ago
  17. QUOTE (Tom Bress @ Aug 19 2008, 05:09 PM) This would need a lot of thinking-through. I've known a bunch of very talented people that have done exceedingly well in exams but struggle terribly when it comes to grading others' exams. IMHO, there would need to be some certification of the graders (which, I assume, something like that happens within NI at the moment). QUOTE (Tom Bress @ Aug 19 2008, 05:09 PM) NI would also (hopefully) create some kind of incentive to make board membership worthwhile to the members. Do you mean other than paid? If I were grading exams, I'd want to be getting an hourly rate
  18. QUOTE (Darren @ Aug 19 2008, 04:09 PM) Yeah - that's what I meant. I think that will suck a lot of folks in...
  19. QUOTE (eaolson @ Aug 19 2008, 03:19 PM) The correct answer: "Are you making me an offer? " QUOTE (TobyD @ Aug 19 2008, 03:42 PM) QUOTE (jdunham @ Aug 19 2008, 03:19 PM) ...this limitation has not yet caused the collapse of the US economy (I prefer to blame that on our elected officials). Careful - This could send us off on a whole different tangent I'm not sure what the standard off-topic of off-topic of off-topic... level of recursion is permitted in standard etiquette, but I'd suggest that we've probably exceeded it
  20. QUOTE (ASTDan @ Aug 19 2008, 03:06 PM) I agree - I figure the ladder logic interface (haven't looked at it yet, so speaking from complete ignorance ) would call VIs, and once folks start editing those to do what they want then they'll be caught in the LabVIEW web... ...forever.

    Insane error

QUOTE (Neville D @ Aug 19 2008, 02:51 PM) When in doubt, search the LabVIEW Wiki! Brian's pages are out of date, and he graciously allowed us to use his pages to build a more managable version here. There's also some info of insane objects and how to use the heap-peek here.
  22. QUOTE (Ton @ Aug 19 2008, 02:11 PM) Yes, but they also might be - it's not your call: it's the employees call on whether they'd be suitable. In short, the employer should ask the employee if they can support the task, not ask them if they have a fmaily and then make an assumption wither way. QUOTE (LV_FPGA_SE @ Aug 19 2008, 02:33 PM) You are correct, but if this is the case then you should ask the candidate what they can or cannot do, not if they are married or not. You can not assume that just because they are married they can't travel overseas for two weeks. So instead of "Are you married?", you should ask" Would you be able to travel on assignment overseas for two weeks and work extra hours at night if necessary?". Then the candidate can decide if they are willing to do the job or not, based on their personal situation. As an example - I'm married and spent a month working in China last year. Being married had no influence (and nor should it) on whether I was offered that assignment. QUOTE (Ton @ Aug 19 2008, 02:35 PM) How would you feel about the following question: 'Do you have a driver's license?' That depends - does the job require me to drive a car? If so, then I think that's a valid question. It's like asking if I have any NI certifications if the job requires that I know LabVIEW.
  23. QUOTE (PaulG. @ Aug 19 2008, 01:20 PM) Couldn't agree more. So is this question personal or technical: "can a cat-type be stuffed into a variant?"
  24. QUOTE (eaolson @ Aug 19 2008, 01:47 PM) Innappropriate, and (at least in the USA) I think asking marital status is illegal.
  25. QUOTE (neB @ Aug 19 2008, 11:06 AM) Not at all - I don't think you should delete it.
