  1. Is it okay if I disagree with you? Dragging shift register wires from one side of a diagram to the other, having to hop over other code that may be in an event case (for example), now THAT gets messy. For pure mess-reduction, local variables are the best way to go. But obviously it's not all just about mess-reduction, which is why local variables are generally used sparingly if at all.
  2. Generally, if one of my apps becomes highly visible, it's a Bad Thing.
  3. Not commenting enough. Not keeping my personal toolbox up to date. There's probably stuff that's been in there for 15 years that some openG function does much better. Also I have a lot of functions that do essentially the same thing. It needs a good housecleaning.
  4. I resemble that remark. It's pure curiosity. You all know about curiosity and Cats. And also doing everything possible to avoid writing IA security documentation... I can only see the top ten. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. I'll go play with it some more. Anything to avoid explaining yet again why my standalone computer system is safe from marauding viruses. And why it doesn't come with it's own fire extinguisher.
  5. I thought I'd posted this already, but I can't find it (or anything similar) anywhere... Is there some way to sort/search members by reputation points?
  6. Ack! I hate it when one of you guyze posts a link to that website! I get absolutely nothing done afterward!
  7. It helps if you have embraced the Noodly Appendages of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.
  8. Updo^H^H^H^H Fondu Undo! Yes, that's it! I still remember the fuss some members of the LV user community made over LV developers "wasting their time" implementing undo...
  9. is done writing security documentation! Now I can go back to Real Work!!

  10. "The software may be executing on only one computer at a time." Hmm. I definitely violate this one. I run source on two computers to debug sending and receiving data. Oops. Then again, since I have 3 licenses registered to me, I'm probably ok.
  11. is off to test the latest software build on an underwater tin can.

  12. "Color Table Generator.vi" in the "Create IntGraph ColorTable.vi" example in plain old LV. I use a (very modified) version of this to adjust the color schemes on intensity graphs, since the Z scale adjuster is one of the more frustrating widgets in LabVIEW. Frustrating, obtuse, very non-intuitive, and except for the simplest of things, often unusable. But I digress... The example shows you how to move a point around on the graph. Or rather, you move a free-dragging cursor away from the apex point in the middle of the plot, and the slope of the plot changes from that middle point to the static points on either side to make that new point the apex.
  13. Pittsburgh style I only recommend 1 if someone actually wants to remember their bday party, tho.
  14. Actually, I've currently got 3 LV licenses, all with SSPs. It was more a matter of finding a box to install them on. But last week I remastered a laptop and have done a clean install of LV2010. Hopefully I'll get some time in the next couple weeks to do some testing. Then I need to find a spare 64-bit machine somewhere and see how *that* works... A little experience is better than none at all. Thanks! That's part of my fear... what will happen when my apps get deployed to machines I have no control over. Luckily (?) I'm an OOP-newbie and haven't found a Real Project I'm willing to use it in, so no classes, yet. This is disturbing, since it sounds like exactly what I do. Thanks for the heads-up.
  15. Wow! That cake looks too real to eat! Or too much like a dust mop to eat. So the next day and a half after I first posted, I kept getting errors when I tried to access LAVA. Michael, I figured you have taken the site down for me to fix the b-day issue. I don't think it's *humanly* possible to have quite as good of a b-day as Penrod's was.
  16. Thanks Paul! Well... for some reason I just took the year off today. I think I'm already starting to get nervous about hitting the Big 5-0 next year. But thanks for the HB!
  17. is surreptitiously installing LV2010 on a work computer. Shh! Don't tell!

  18. My B-day came and went a week or so ago, and I noticed it didn't show up in the "member(s) having a birthday today" on the LAVA home page. Not that this is a big deal, but since I've been watching it I haven't seen it be anything other than "0". Is it working, or doesn't anyone else have their B-day posted?
  19. I know some folks have had issues with stability in the LV2010 IDE. But I'm wondering if, after you've created an .exe (for those of you who do), have you had any problems? Applications that run 99 times but crash on the 100th time. Intermittent unexplained errors. That sort of thing. I need to be able to create both 32 and 64 bit apps. LV8.6.1 Isn't going to do that for me. If the problems with LV2010 are just in the IDE, I may just have to grit my teeth and deal with them. (Besides I really really want an excuse valid technical reason to upgrade )
  20. I apologize in advance, but have to ask the obvious question: do the CommonName and UserName always follow a format where you can derive one from the other, or was that just the case in your example?
  21. As you say, my guess is there must be some aspect of "gathering the low-hanging fruit" going on. Personally, if I look at my list of ongoing tasks and Project A will take only a couple days, and Project B will take months but is higher priority, odds are I'll find time to knock out Project A before Project B is finished. Especially if the folks who are asking for Project A have said nice things about my code in the past.
