  1. Actually ... since I got my 24" LCD I have gotten into trouble once or twice looking for backgrounds ... can't remember any redirects but I've gotten more ZoneAlarm trojan warnings looking for (CLEAN ;) ) wallpapers ... they're the worst, I think.

  2. I rarely get redirects anymore. I've been using LabVIEWSearch for ages and it's the first time it happened. So does this mean I shouldn't use any Google custom searches? I thought Google was pretty good about warning you if you getting ready to link to a possible malware site.

I've been out of town for about 3 weeks (trip to France and then NIWeek) and my LAVA RSS reader has over a thousand unread posts -- I have absolutely no chance of reading them all, so...

What did I miss while I was gone?

PS - I'm glad to be back :)

Something about Justin needing an "intervention" and him being in "denial". Talk to Norm. None of my business.

  4. I like iGoogle and use it as my home page. One of my links is LabVIEWSearch.com

Today I ran a search on LabVIEWSearch and one of the links re-directed me to one of those "YOUR COMPUTER IS RUNNING SLOWER THAN NORMAL! YOU MIGHT HAVE SPYWARE!" and wanted me to download an "anti-spyware", i.e. ZOMBIEWARE software. Of course it wouldn't let me leave. Had to stop IE Explorer with task manager. And of course I had about 5 tabs opened up. Isn't this the kind of thing you find surfing for porn or pirated music?

I notice LAVA has LabVIEWSearch on the portal page. Has anyone else experienced this little nuisance? And if you have, why do we still have a link to it on LAVA? I realize it may be something we have little control over. But the least we could do is remove the link in order to avoid the next guy losing a few minutes worth of work because of a scam under the guise of a LabVIEW web search "tool".

    /rant :)

  5. As an NCO in the US Air Force I fought in the "Cold War" against you guys. I worked at NORAD. I helped watch for your first strike ... and helped track Santa Clause. But that was a long time ago. I harbor no ill feelings whatsoever to you or your people now. I wish to think that your people and ours are more alike than we are different. My only grave concern is what yours and our political leaders are planning now. Between your government, China and Islam I don't know who to fear more. But over here at LAVA, you're a brother to me, Eugen. :)

  6. Actuators need a controller and an amplifier. LV communicates with the controller. I've used rotary actuators that had built-in controllers and amplifiers, but they were serial devices and a "driver" wasn't needed. I know a few of the bigger motion control companies (Aerotech, Parker) will sell you "Software Development Kits" for LabVIEW if you are going the separate controller/amplifier route.

The forums are awfully quiet when americans are too busy drinking beers...

    Cheers to you all.

Cheers to you as well. But most Americans are doing other things on our Independence Day besides drinking beers. We are spending time with family, eating too many hot dogs and hamburgers, watching glorious fireworks, FREELY talking politics, FREELY talking religion without fear of dismemberment or beheadings or "honor killings", AGREEING how blessed we are here, RELISHING in our freedom, THANKING God and our military, and HUMBLED because of how much our FREEDOM has cost us over the last 200+ years. At the risk of sounding sappy, in the words of Irving Berlin and Kate Smith: "God Bless America"

I am finding that its is hard to develop really useful applications when doing one-off projects where a customer writes a one or two page requirements document and wants an application to meet those requirements.

Danger! Danger! Danger! Danger Will Robinson!! You are not making any sense. How can an on-off project be a single one or two page requirement? I know nothing of your specific application, but I can tell you that "on-off" projects are diametrically opposed to one requirement. "Scope creep" will kill you. Professionally and financially. Do the absolute best you can with the current requirement you have. If the functionality is not on the requirement, you don't do it. Period. If the customer wants more, you draft a new requirement. I'm just looking out for your sanity ... speaking from experience.

  10. QUOTE (Poom-Thailand @ Jul 3 2008, 05:03 AM)

A "lone gunman"/new user is a tough place to be. I've spent most of my LV career doing it alone. But you'll love LV. Follow any tutorials the best you can. Spend some time posting over here. Get a good book. Read EACH and EVERY page and do every exercise that you can. It will take time. Be patient and experiment. It will come. When you get to your robot break it down into it's simplest components and operations. Start with just one axis/positioner. Play around with velocities and positioning commands. Your code should be written to allow you to control and monitor every parameter (velocity, direction, position, current draw, etc.) of the axis in a single subVI. Then just duplicate that subVI for another axis. Then start putting them together.

We will help you, but you must be willing to do the work yourself. Just start doing it. When you get to your code for your robot but run into a problem post your code to show us what you have and a few of us will probably help you out. Have fun, Poom. Welcome to LAVA. And greetings to Thailand. :)

  11. Great idea, Mike.

As much as I love LV the UI tools are somewhat limited and leave a lot to be desired. This could be a great place for inspiration. And since I've been running Vista for over 6 months now I'm feeling like a spoiled rotten child wanting his (eye) candy.

As far as posting really messy diagrams? No. Bad idea. Someone might post something you (or I) designed a few years ago.

  12. I think we are pretty good at staying on topic here. We have the Lounge for anything noisy. And if we start assigning SNR's to topics eventually someone might start assigning SNR's to members. That could lead to some of us starting to feel bad about ourselves. :o
