Why a DLL? Why not have 2 exes: one your splash screen (set it to topmost using a winapi call) that launches your main application.

I don't know. I guess it depends on what their perception of their job is. For example, if a firefighter is called to a catastrophe (think WTC) and thinks "this is way beyond what I signed up for, and I'm in no way comfortable doing this", are they, in contrast, cowards?

Me too - it's invaluable. Much easier than trying to hunt down an appropriate error code, and your BDs are more readable (I've seen people create their own 5000 series error codes rather than looking for an existing code).

That's happened to me too - the number on the left was decimal, the number of the right was hex. Not sure if that's you're issue here though...

I can't really see what you're doing from the example you gave - maybe try to break it down to just the area where the problem is. Here's an example of a couple of ways to write a byte to the serial port. Write Byte to Serial Port.vi

Other languages aren't based on dataflow I'm suggesting that could be an option, as long as we keep the current behaviour.
