Just to share how I got around this: By deleting 1 front panel item at a time I found that one single control was causing PaneRelief to crash; an XY graph. Setting it temporarily to not scale and replacing it with a standard XY graph (the one I had had some colours set to transparent etc) was enough to avoid having PaneRelief crash LabVIEW, but it would now just present a timeout error: I found a way arund this too though: the VI in question was member of a DQMH lvlib that probably added a lot of complexity for PaneRelief. With a copy saved as a non-member it worked: I could replace the graph, edit the splitters with PaneRelief without the timeout error (even setting the size to 0), then copy back the original graph replacing the temporary one, and finally move the copy back into the lvlib and swap it with the original. Voila! What a Relief... 😉 I probably have to repeat this whole ordeal if I ever need to readjust the splitters in that VI with PaneRelief though 😮

The Pane Relief tool is great, but sometimes it seems VIs seem to have become incompatible with it and any change of the splitters will lead to a LabVIEW crash (cursor goes into busy mode for a while after the change, then poof). Even if you then remove almost all other controls and splitters and recreate a single splitter its front panel, doing a normally simple edit (nothing special like setting the splitter size to 0 or anything) to that will crash too...(removing *all* controls does work though...) When this happens there is often an awful lot of things to recreate if the VI has to be recreated/all controls deleted (especially since copying diagrams does not replicate front panels or vice versa...). Has anyone experienced this and found a way to fix it? (I have the source code of the tool available so one possible step is to start debugging the crash on that, but perhaps someone has been down that rabbit hole already?)

Nicely described approach Shaun. I am doing something similar with a lab automation project that involves vacuum chamber and multi-zone temperature control. Elected to use the messenger framework, which supports 'spinning up' instances and TCP capability for remote devices like cRIO. The messenger architecture also supports many types of asynchronous messaging beyond simple synchronous command/response. Your idea of decoupling EC sequencing logic is good, moving it out of the EC subsystem to allow synchronization with other subsystems during ramp/soak profiles. Hey remember Test Stand Lite? This is where an such a scripting component would really shine and be a great benefit to the community.

OK. This is how I design systems like this. 1. TCP. Each subsystem has a TCP interface. This allows spinning up "instances" then connecting to them even across networks. You can rationalise the TCP API and I usually use a thin LabVIEW wrapper around SCPI (most of your devices will support SCPI). You can also use it to make non SCPI compliant devices into SCPI ones (your Environmental Chamber - EC - is probably one that doesn't support SCPI). If you do this right, you can even script entire tests from a text file just using SCPI commands. 2. Services. Each subsystem offers services. These are for when #1 isn't enough and we need state. A good example of this is your Environmental Chamber. It is likely you will have temperature profiles that control signals and measurements need to be synchronized with. While services may be devices (a DVM, for example), services can also be synchronization logic that sequences multiple devices. If you put that logic in your EC code, it will fix that code for that specific sequence so don't do that. Instead use services to glue other devices (like the DVM and EC) into synchronization processes. Along with #1, this will form the basis of recipe's that can incorporate complex state and sequencing. In this way you will compartmentalize your system into reusable modules. First thing you should do is make a "Logging" service. Then when your devices error they can report errors for your diagnostics. The second thing should be a service that "views" the log in real-time so you can see what's going on, when it's going on. (This is why we have logging levels). 3. Global State. If you have 1 & 2 this can be anything. It can be a text file with a list of SCPI commands (#1). It can be a service you wrote in #2, Test Stand, web page or a bash/batch script. This is where you use your recipe's to fulfill a test requirement. 4. You will need to think carefully about how the subsystems talk to each other. For example. Using SCPI a MEAS :VOLT:DC? command returns almost instantly (command-response pattern). However for the EC you may want to wait until a particular temperature has been reached before issuing MEAS :VOLT:DC?. The problem here is that SCPI is command-response but the behavior required is event driven. One could make the the TCP interface (#1) of the EC accept MEAS :TEMP? where the command doesn't return unless the target setpoint has been reached. However, this won't work reliably and requires internal state and checks for the edge cases though. So it may actually be better in #2. There are a number of ways to address these things using #1, #2 or #3 and that is why you are getting the big bucks. You will notice I haven't mentioned specific technologies here (apart for TCP). For #1 you shouldn't need anything other than reentrant VI's and VI Server. For #2 you can use your favourite foot-shooting method but notice that you are not limited to one type and can choose an architecture for the specific task (they don't all have to be QMH, for example). For #3 you don't even have to use LabVIEW.

At this point, I have removed the single occurrence where I had used the toolkit, as the license would have been problematic to make my code acceptable as reusable.

Thanks for still monitor these forums to help give answers. It sounds like the intent is to allow free use in any context, being the literal person I am, interprets accessing the block diagram as "discovering the source code" which would violate it. This is also a good exercise in reading the license agreements, for things you download.

I confirm that this license is nearly identical to the standard EULA we use for our commercial products. Some wording is not applicable to a distributed palette of VIs like this. Our intention was to share a few reusable tools, used internally, with the community. Ideally, we should have released them under a standard open-source license such as MIT or a similar option. These VIs have been released “as-is,” without support or any guarantee that they will function for your specific use case. You may need to troubleshoot or fix any issues on your own. Feel free to use them in any context. I’ll look into whether it's possible to update the packages on the tool network to replace the current license with a more standard open-source one.

I'm prone to use JKI state machines for this sort of simple test sequencing. It is easy to learn, and surprisingly powerful once you become proficient with it. You can also use JKI State Machine Objects (traditional JKI SM wrapped in a class) which makes it simple to support multiple parallel state machines, and which also supports using events. Hi, I am currently designing a large LabVIEW application that needs to be highly modular and extensible. Its core functionality needs to be able to load and interact with dynamically loaded "plugin" VIs at runtime. I have been exploring a few different architectural patterns, including using a VI server or an Actor framework with plugin functionality. I would particularly like to hear from those who have successfully implemented a plugin-based system in LabVIEW. What were the main challenges you faced? Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

It feels strange to me too. As I understand it, the "no merge" clause makes libraries legally unusable by others. A quick search reveals that the "no merge" clause is found in numerous different software licenses: https://www.google.com/search?q="merge+the+Software+into+any+other+software" My best guess is that the clause was originally written for standalone applications (meaning that you're meant to run the software as-is, without copying its source code into your own, or linking your own software to its binaries). However, somewhere along the way the clause got copied directly into a library license, without the involvement of a lawyer who understands software licensing. Perhaps @mabe can clarify? And second, what is the purpose of a piece of code that you cannot share with others than those in your "business"? I am suspecting that the license file has simply been badly written. Any hint of what to do (save for avoiding the toolkit at all cost)?

Well the fact that you have VI Server property nodes in your top level VI should not force the entire VI hierarchy into the UI thread. Typically the VI will start in one of the other execution systems and context switch to the UI thread whenever it encounters such a property node. But the VISA nodes should still be executed within the execution system that the top level VI is assigned too. Of course if that VI has not been set to a specific execution system things can get a bit more complex. It may depend on how you start them up in that case.

You are correct...I worded my thought incorrectly. My thought was that since the Keysight code was using Synchronous VISA calls and both the Keysight / Pendulum were most likely running in the UI thread bc their callers were in the UI thread and the execution system was set to same as caller initially, the VISA Write / Read calls to the powered off instrument were probably blocking the other instrument with a valid connection (since by my understanding there is typically only one UI thread).
