Unprintable characters on LavaG

Recommended Posts

There was some changes to LavaG a few weeks ago and I suspect one of the changes is how it interprets extended characters.  I noticed the text above my avatar said something like "Just because I don#t care doesn't mean I don#t understand".  I went in and edited my text deleting the bizarre characters and replacing them with the apostrophe and it looks right...other than the fact that it cuts it off which I just noticed.

EDIT: Fixed the cut off.

Thanks for the feedback guys!
Now to the Moderators/Administrators: Can we expect a solution any time soon? EDIT: Maybe there is something we could help with?

I can now place funny characters in your name :D and see what happens if I quote you? You loose even more characters :P

Not sure yet, the issue has been reported and we'll see what we can do.  Again I suspect this is a new way to interpret some characters and the solution will likely be to replace the odd characters with ones the update can display properly.

Hello!

My first post on LAVA :) I hope it is ok to revive this thread, since I have similar problem: unicode page text view does not work for special characters in the forum. I did not see such problem for years with any other websites. Any other text code settings, same or worse result. I use the latest Firefox Quantum 57.0.2. I see same problems in Chrome.

Is this my PC, or others can see such issues on the site?

Here is a screenshot attached representing what I see in Firefox:

I haven't had issues for the past few years and didn't notice any problems today. The posts in your picture are from 2014, so maybe they weren't fixed during the upgrade. Please post a link to the topic in question, so we can compare.

My posts seem to gather these corruptions whenever the site gets upgraded.   I post from a Mac, and that might be part of the issue.  Seems to be the various types of quote characters.    “Here is a Test” to see what'll happen in future.

This was:

I think the "newcomer effect" fooled me, and it really looks like only drjdpowell's posts are effected (and those who quoted his text). So this is not a general problem fortunately :)  I should have checked more carefully other posts too, but I was too deep in reading this particular post :)

edit: so more precisely: only drjdpowell's OLD posts are effected (and the correct English word is AFFECTED, I always mix up these :D )

Note the difference in the quote marks.  My Mac replaces the generic double quote with starting and ending quotes (which, presumably, are higher Unicode code points).  Your computer (Windows?) does not.  I think these character codes are getting mangled during site upgrade, leading to gibberish.  Does anyone else post from a Mac (and Safari)?

An Edit made from Chrome (same computer): "Test from Chrome"   --> no fancy quotes, so this issue may only affect Safari Users

Something fishy is going on here though. Is it me, or some spammer is managing to inject spam links in jrpowell quotes? Hmm, last four messages, single posters to a dead thread.

It's a pretty common spam technique, designed to sneak spam links into innocent-sounding posts.

A moderator should clean out the spam.

Yup, thanks for reporting. I saw the post but didn't look close enough at it.

I reported all of them last week. Did not notice at first either but in the last post somehow the link sprang in my eyes and I was first thinking it was a special name for quote marks wondering what that word would mean. 😀 Google quickly taught me that it is some drugs name and from there it was obvious. Then looked at the other 3 before that and saw the same pattern together with a pretty meaningless message.
