    After I made this post I decided to bring the LabVIEW Wiki back online. It was not easy and took several days of server upgrades and hacking. The good news is I was able to bring up all the original pages.. The even better news is I talked with @The Q and @hooovahh and we are all on the same page as to how to move forward. @The Q did a great job of stepping forward and trying to fill the void that the LabVIEW Wiki's absence had left. He's agreed to migrate all the new content he created over to the LabVIEW Wiki, from Fandom and continue to develop new articles and content moving forward on the new site. He will also help in moderating the Wiki and will be promoted to Admin rights on the Wiki. His help is much appreciated. The LabVIEW landing page created here on LAVA is awesome but the forums don't lend themselves to static content creation. Instead @hooovahh has agreed to move the old landing page to here. That will be the new home for the landing page. This will become a valuable resource for the community and I hope all of you start pointing new people in that direction. With many editors, it can only get better and better over time. Where do we go from here: Logging in. - The old accounts are still there. If you're a LAVA old-timer, then you can try to login using your LAVA username. If the password doesn't work then reset it. You can also create a new account here. I'm going to announce a day when new accounts can be created. I'm limiting it for now because of all the spam accounts that can be potentially created. There's an issue with the current Captcha system. if you are super-eager to start creating content now and want to help, send me a direct message on LAVA and I can manually create an account right away. - New account creation is now open. Permitted content: - I'm not going to put restrictions on content at the moment. Obvious vandalism or offensive\illegal content will not be tolerated of course. However, the guidelines will be adjusted as time goes on and new content is created. There's just not enough content right now to be overly concerned about this. We need content. Discussions about the Wiki. - Each article page has an associated discussions page where you can discuss issues related to that article. Please use that mechanism (same etiquette as wikipedia). General Wiki issues\questions and high level discussions can be done here. So now, if you need to add content, you can do it yourself. Feedback as always is welcome.

In addition to online there are Local LabVIEW User Groups which meet regularly to present and understand LabVIEW and NI topics. Find one close you you and subscribe or monitor topics. NI often supports local user groups, but they are in most cases ran and organized by the community. NI Week NI Week is another great way to connect with and learn. Hosted in Austin Texas once a year it is a week long conference with training, discussions, keynotes and other activities. Many previous NI Week videos can be found online but no single source is available which aggregates all marketing, keynotes, and technical sessions in one location. The best resource for content is a site setup for video hosting done by Mark Balla over the years. Summits If you hold a CLA or CLD there are specific summits for you that are free. These are often tailored presentations for a specific skill set with the focus on technical discussion and problem solving. There are two CLA summits, one in Austin Texas, and one in Europe both held once a year. CLD summits happen more frequently and locations change from year to year. Consult their specific discussion forums on NI to see when the next one is. Just like NI Week Mark Balla has several videos available here. Needing Professional Help If a project is getting out of hand and is beyond the skill level of your team, NI suggests looking at one of their Alliance Partners. Contact one in your area, and they will help try to best guide you on your project. I Want To Contribute to the Community Developing Code For Others Arguably the most difficult thing about sharing code, and reusing code, is the mind set and considerations associated with other developers using software you wrote. It is a type of mental exercise where you need to put yourself in the mind of the developer using your software. NI's Reference Deign Portal is a good resource for understanding various coding structures, and best practices for designing code for others, and can help with standardizing code for other developers.     You know how you can change the wire appearance for a class in the class properties? As it turns out, LabVIEW internally allows for more flexibility than that dialog gives you. So I made an advanced wire editing tool...and unlike a lot of stuff I post, you can actually use this for serious projects, because it does not use any private/unsupported LabVIEW functionality! With this tool, you can set wire size without limits (with results similar to this), customize both wire layers with any 8x8 monochrome pattern, and also mess with different draw options. Strangely, a few of these settings seem to have no effect, and many of the options for one of them actually crash LabVIEW. (These ones are disabled in my tool, but you can re-enable them by editing a typedef.) Given that this is actually a documented, supported property that's officially supposed to work, I've reported this as a bug to NI; if any NI engineers see this and feel like investigating, you can refer to service request #7762024.     There are a bunch of objects in LabVIEW that aren't exposed in the default palettes, and are normally inaccessible except through scripting. I made a Quick Drop plugin that exposes all of these. Many of these are no longer supported, and others never were supported in the first place. Hidden ones are displayed with an "X" next to them to warn you: as I often say, be careful with these, and don't use them in any code you care about, as they can cause crashes, data corruption, and who knows what else! Download the LLB below and place it in your <LabVIEW install dir>\resource\dialog\QuickDrop\plugins folder. Then press Ctrl+Space, Ctrl+S to open this dialog. Select an item from the list and click OK, and there you go. There's some interesting/strange stuff in here! EDIT: Couple things I forgot to mention. The first time you open this (and whenever you rebuild the list) it uses two private properties on the app reference, to get the list of controls and indicators in the palette. Since this is just a property read, I'm sure the worst that could happen is a crash when you try to open the dialog, but I can't make any guarantees. Also there's some false positives for hidden items, mainly with front panel controls/indicators that come in different styles. Place by Style.llb

    I just became aware of this thread and I'm not going to go back and comment on all the discussion points that have been made before, except to say: The original code which did not use a shift register was wrong, but happened the work because of a bug in the LabVIEW inplaceness algorithm. Any input tunnel should retain its original value of every iteration of the loop, so it should've stayed not-a-refnum every time, and therefore the dynamic registration should should have been lost where the loop iterated. The issue was that the left dynamic registration terminal (which is always in-place to the right one) was also in-place to the input tunnel, causing its value to be stomped incorrectly. This is clearly a bug and needed to be fixed. It violated dataflow 'rules' for how tunnels are supposed to behave, and could've made some correct programs yield incorrect behavior. This is not a change that would break a correctly written program, so it does not qualify as an "API breaking" change; this usage has always been wrong but happened to work due to a bug. (This is categorically different than changing behavior of correct code or even changing undocumented behavior, which we try strenuously to avoid.)

Allows easy working with "subitems" in JSON format, or one can convert to/from LabVIEW types. Uses the new "malleable VIs" of LabVIEW 2017 to convert to any LabVIEW type directly. JSON text makes use of a form a JSON Path notation, allowing easy and rapid access to the subitems of interest. Requires LabVIEW 2017 and install by VIPM 2017 or later.     The preference to use init methods instead of non-default class constants is so strong, LabVIEW NXG is planning to never support the feature. Any class constant there will always have only the class’ default value.

    Hey LAVAmaniacs! It's been a while since I poked at the LAVA server. There seems to be a lot cobwebs and dust in the server room. The LAVA software hasn't been updated in a couple years. That's way too long. I'm going to jump in and see what I can do about upgrading the LAVA back-end to the latest and greatest. This will fix many issues. Last time I tried this, it failed and I had to revert back. I didn't plan on it failing and didn't allocate time for getting tech support from Invision. This time I'm planning for the upgrade to fail and then getting Invision support involved. This means the site might be offline for a few days beyond the weekend. Sorry, but it's a small pain we have to go through for long-term stability and security. Don't worry though. This time I have a crack team to help me out:

    I think you can! It looks like the compiler exception doesn't check the fully qualified name. You can put your inline-safe XNodes inside libraries to namespace them, and name them all Error Ring.xnode.

    Writing the notes forced me to watch the videos closely. I'm going to use the notes as a quick-ref whilst getting started and hoped others might have a go if they had them too. Feel free to make changes/fix wrong stuff in whatever way you like - expect you're a busy man. I'm happy to own the doc and expand it given the info. It's written in libreoffice writer, which exports a good pdf. Now looking fwd to cooking up a few actors.     Thanks to hooovahh for posting information before I could get to it. Most of you already know me but for those of you who don't, you can always reach out to me directly if you have questions or concerns about LabVIEW. As he stated, the 2018SP1 installer was not complete and wasn't supposed to go live online when it did. Our apologies to everyone who downloaded it and found it to be incomplete. The issue with the installer has been fixed and we will release the finished product/installers soon. My personal apologies that our installers were so eager to get out the door and into your hands that they didn't wait for all of the final testing to be complete. When we do our next get together at the CLA conference, LV Champions call, NIWeek, or other LabVIEW-related event, feel free to come find me and let me know how we can best improve LabVIEW to help you.

    I think it would be possible for JKI to add besides the JKI package repository and the NI Tools Network repository one more well known repositorey such as a LAVA URL to the free edition. That would not be a big deal to add I'm sure. Another option I would definitely consider, is a paid version of VIPM that costs a small fee but then allows to add custom repositories to that client. You still would need a full pro license to create new repositories but not to access them. The current license model is impossible to defend in a company as ours where you not only need a pro license to create your own company wide repository, but anybody wanting to access that repository needs that license too in order to add it to the locations VIPM will check for packages. So something like the free community edition as now with additional LAVA repository added. Then an intermediate Developer Client edition that allows to subscribe to custom repositories that everybody in a company could use. And last but not least the full featured VIPM Pro as it is now. The old OpenG package manager could more or less do the two first editions already, it is just outdated and doesn't handle new LabVIEW file tyypes properly anymore, that were coming out with LabVIEW 8 and later. EDIT: About 2 years ago we were evaluating in our company how to manage internal libraries and the distribution thereof. VIPM was considered too but the fact that every developer would need a Pro license killed that idea very quickly. If there would have been a Developer Client edition that normal LabVIEW developers could use and could have been purchased as a site license for a feasable fee, I'm pretty sure we would have been able to get that solution approved together with a few Pro licenses.

    Hi All Apologies if this isn't the correct forum to post this on but I wanted to let the community know about a new LabVIEW podcast series I am running - The Quick Drop Podcast QDP LogoQDP is a community driven podcast that I want to use to talk about LabVIEW and engineering/Science in general via a medium that I don't think we currently make the most of.     Hardly "rusty". Any software that is still at 1.0.1 after years of use is made of stainless steel People just don't know how to release fully featured and tested software any more. Users have been conditioned to think that software that is continuously updated and fixed can only be good when, in reality, it is a testament to how poor the design, implementation and testing is.

    I learned a lot about serialization from writing my library. Took me 2 years of research and planning. "All I want to do is flatten and unflatten some data and I need a library of 900 VIs to do it?!?!?!!" Yes, give or take a couple hundred. Turns out serialization is really a lot more complex than I ever would have thought when you really get down to the core. Bloating the string is one of the most fascinating issues, something I totally ignored when I created the original flatten-to-string behaviors for LV classes. To flatten an object, you obviously need to record the type. But what about an array of objects? Do you need the type for every element in the array? Yes, if the array is heterogenous; no if it is homogenous. Can that be factored out? Depends upon what you plan to do with the string! If you're always going to start at the front of the string and unflatten all the data then you can factor out lots of stuff because you have context for the remainder of the string. But if you're going to fly along the string and find subportions to pull out then you need every subportion to be a complete record. "I have an array of 10000 objects. I need only 1 of them." That's a real serialization requirement and it has severe impact on the format of the string itself! Formatting for localization, formatting for versioning, formatting for different encodings, formatting for transmission (requires more redundancy in the data), pretty-printing for human readability... it's a mess. The one main takeaway I had from my project? I support trade embargoes on any nation that tries to use a comma for a decimal point. I know... Britain and the USA are outliers here, but, seriously, it's called a "decimal point"... stop putting a tail on it! I can deal with two different systems for units. I can deal with myriad ways to format a timestamp (even different calendars). I'm supportive of arcane Unicode encodings so that every language ever can be recorded. But I hit my breaking point on commas as decimal points. Why would I want to live in a world where I can order a 1.125 meter steel beam then be charged for delivery of something over a kilometer long?!?! This table should not exist. Yes, my library provides support for such abominations, but it was while adding that feature that I became a strong proponent of cultural hegemony!

    reshape array + index, inside of a diagram disable structure reshape array takes any dim array and returns 1-dim array. Index takes 1dim array and returns element. Disable structure makes sure the code doesn't run and that you always get the default value for the data type. any aggregation function (add array elements, array max and min, etc) will work too, but I think the reshape/index is clearer.

    The convert to standard is the only mechanism. I have intentions of opening up the instance VI, but I've run into some *fascinating* historical code... malleables will get a nice power kick in 2017 SP1 and some potent assist features in 2018, but opening the instance won't be in 2018 at this rate (seeing as how I need to be feature complete on the 18th). In the meantime, convert to standard and then hit ctrl+z to put the malleable back. Suboptimal but it does work.

    What a FUD! SubVersion has never been licensed under the GPL license. It was developed by CollabNet and distributed under a fairly liberal license. Later it got transferred to the Apache Software Foundation which distributes software under the Apache License which is also NOT comparable to GPL. Even then the GPL does not cover the license of code maintained with a GPL licensed tool, but only code you would link in any way with that tool. And in the case of the Linux kernel there is even an explicit exception that applications running on Linux and therefore technically linking to the kernel in some way (they need to do kernel system calls for just about everything that interacts with the system) do not fall under the GPL unless the application developer elects to use the GPL for his software. As to VIPM it is under a commercial license from JKI. The OpenG libraries that are also used inside VIPM as well as being installed through VIPM are all under a BSD license, except the shared library parts that I wrote, which I left under LGPL. Technically this has no influence on any application developed with such OpenG libraries. The VI parts are BSD licensed and allow you to do almost anything with it except claiming you wrote them yourself and they require you to somewhere put a copyright notice that your application uses libraries from OpenG. The LGPL licensed shared libraries in those tools don't taint your application either since they are dynamically linked as a library and since LGPL explicitly exempts any software that uses such a library in such a way from any obligation to be open sourced itself, you are fully safe there. The main limitation the LGPL license has on those libraries is that you can't grab the C source code for them and create your own shared library from it and not open source it under the LGPL (or GPL) yourself. I feel this is a fair limitation. If someone takes that code and improves it in any way I want a chance that this improvement is returned to the community. If you use Tortoise SVN then yes that is distributed under the GPL but even then claiming that since your source files pass through Tortoise SVN somehow they are suddenly also GPL licensed is a total bullshit. It's analogous to claiming that any car driving through your private road automatically is owned by you from that point on. You may forbid other cars to drive on that road and get a ruling from a judge that anyone still driving there without your consent can get a fine but you don't automatically own them. Actually I think it is even more analogous to anyone driving on the public road in front of your house being suddenly liable to you for the mere fact of driving there!

    I've been working a lot lately with by-reference architectures that still cooperate completely with LabVIEW's implementation of OOP and polymorphism. I've also recently taken an interest in trying to speed up development with secondary providers (similar to GOOP) to enable automatic creation of accessor VIs hidden behind the DVR, automatic creation of the private data type and constructor/destructor, etc. within the project window. I'm generally not a fan of the extra stuff that goop adds in to classes, I'd prefer to keep the source code looking as close to a normal class as possible. That said, I've started on my first ever XNode and it's a cross between an unbundle by name node and the -> operator in C. It functions just like a normal UBN, however it was also pull items out of DVRs. Having to plop down a UBN to pull out the reference from the class, an in place node to dereference, and then another UBN to pull the data out gets tiresome after about the 100th property VI gets written. So far I've gotten the node drawing completed (except for data type coloring of the labels), the type inferencing from the input wire, and the popup menu for selecting an item. Next up will be the menu selection code so that the names will finally show up in the terminals! Then I get the daunting task of scripting up the GenerateCode ability >_> Anyone interested in something like this? Following this will be a match to the Bundle by Name node that serves the same purpose except to write the items.

    There was a crashed cache table in the database which I repaired. I think this might have been the source of the problems. So perhaps it's fixed now. Not sure how this table always gets corrupt. Mysteries of MYSQL and the forums software.

    The latest guidance, given to both customers and to LV R&D: development in the current platform will be increasing and will continue for the next few years. Not just bug fixes, but actual feature development. When NXG reaches maturity such that it is capable of being a full replacement for the current platform, it will be renamed as just "LabVIEW" and the current platform will move to some other name, TBD. That "full replacement" version is what some people call the "parity release", although parity is a bit of a misnomer since some features are being deliberately left in the past (front panel data socket, "Enable Database" on subVIs, to name two). If you hear about NXG reaching parity, it means the point where our most advanced customers can fully do their jobs with a UI that they're at least grudgingly happy about (Hoovah's graph of user happiness earlier in this thread is quite accurate, IMHO). From that rename point, there will be several years of support for the current platform: limited bug fixing and validation for new OS editions as they occur. How many years exactly will be communicated at that time, but it will be multiple. That's the summary. Now, to put some details behind that... I personally have at least 2 years worth of new features in the pipe. My personal attention is split, with about 15% to NXG and 85% to LabVIEW. There are a couple of teams with 2018 features, and I'm expecting to see a few more on-boarding for that and 2019. The majority of developers will still be working on NXG, but we will see a lot more life in LabVIEW. The new features will mostly (but not exclusively) focus on language developments, not editor developments. The language enhancements of channels and malleable VIs are both going to see improvements going forward. There are four new structure nodes being kicked around, one of which you've seen if you've seen the NIWeek or CLA Summit presentation on 2017 malleable VIs. For the other three, ask @lordexod... long experience tells me he's probably discovered their early footprints in the code. ;-) I said there would not be many editor developments. That's because the whole inspiration for NXG was to provide a new editor because the code in the current environment makes editor enhancements particularly cumbersome (30+ years of development makes for a lot of module coupling). Given that, it makes little sense to try to forge ahead with most editor improvements. But there are some editor enhancements that are worth doing, as you see from the live drag and the remove space enhancement of the last couple versions. There will be more ahead. Because the compiler and execution engine are shared between LabVIEW and NXG, there's a team working on optimizations to both of those, so you'll see improvements in those areas. The interest in improving run-time load speed has lead people to discover ways to improve load speed in the current editor... you'll see some of those improvements in 2017, more in 2017 SP1, and another few in 2018. That's as much signposting of the road map as I can give at this time. I hope this information provides at least some reassurance to the LAVA community.

    Yeah, No. I've never seen a patronising waveform before . That's not happening this time and probably hasn't happened for many years. We've seen LabVIEW stagnate with placebo releases and there are so many maker boards for less than $100, hell, less than $10, it's no longer funny (and you don't need $4000 worth of software to program them). I while ago I put a couple of Real-time Raspberry PIs in system instead of NI products. You love Arduino, right? There is a shift change in the availability of devices and the tools to program them and it has been hard to justify LabVIEW for a while now except if a company was already heavily locked in. If it's not working on Linux then that's a serious hobbling of the software since I, like many others, am now looking to expunge Windows due to privacy concerns for myself and my clients.
